What do you expect a 2 year old to learn?

I have a 2 year old. From past 2 months he is going to a local playgroup. I thought a 2 year need to learn communication, interaction and playing. Other than that I thought they need to learn alphabets, numbers or colors. But I was wrong. They play group teaches a lot more. Days of the week, counting, name of planets, shapes and much more. I think such curriculum is too much for a 2 year old to learn. What do you think as parents?

I agree that small children are little sponges. At this age, their brains are still forming. 'Experts say' that by exposing them to as much as possible helps the synapses form in the right ways. Exposing them to too much TV and computer games does the opposite. Supposedly, kids 2 and under should not watch ANY TV or computers. I have been playing French and Spanish music in my car when we drive places since my son was very little. Now, at 3.5, he sings along! I don't think he understands everything he is saying but to be able to say the words - that alone is HUGE! Kids will tell you when it is too much - they will stop being interested or the will 'tune out'. Some kids will actually go off and go to sleep when things are overwhelming. By the way, I lived in S'pore for 5 years. Loved it! I REALLY miss the fabulous food.

Kids 2 and under should not watch TV? Is that possible? I do not think in our today's social setting. I can restrict TV watching. But my son operates the TV at my home. My son loves music too. He sings some Christian devotional songs with us. He can sing in the right tune but he cannot say all words correctly. Spend 5 years in Singapore? That is too long. When itcomes to food, Singapore's past time is eating food.

It is a lot of information and they may not 'learn' all of it, but they are being exposed to it and that will really help them out when they get a little older. These concepts will seem familiar to them and so they'll actually learn it faster the next time it's introduced. A 2 year old is capable of learning a lot though...my second youngest will be 3 in a few weeks but for awhile he's been able to count to 10, he knows his colors, he knows most if not all of the alphabet, he recognizes/reads his name and his brother's name, he doesn't really get computer time but he knows how to work the mouse to make pages do what he wants them to do, he knows many of the current Sprint Cup drivers' names by either their number or their sponsor, he know a lot of wrestlers names, he can even recognize a Chevy truck LOL when we're in the car. A child at that age will absorb whatever they're taught. They may not be able to express it yet but it's all in their brains.
