I have tried reading your discussion several times just to picture out the things you've been trying to tell. I can't figure out the one you said looks like knitting. By the way, do you have a basic knowledge of the crochet stitches? or you are starting from zero? Because reading a pattern is quite tricky, like when it says double stitch, you loop only once, or if it says a treble, no need to make only two. I suggest you watch videos on how to do the basic crochet stitches if in case you don't know it yet. That would be a great help so that you'll understand it better. I also learned crocheting by myself and I'm the only one in the family who knows how to crochet. Whenever I don't am having difficulty with a certain stitch, I always consult the internet for instructions or demos. Keep on trying and don't give up. It really takes some patience before you get it but once you've learned the techniques, you'll reap your rewards and you'll have fun creating lots of things.

Well I don't know if you got the hang of it yet or not, but I hope that this information helps. My grandmother bought me a crochet or a knitting kit, and it just looked to kid-dealistic for me so I didn't even really worry about even trying. Now I am looking into crocheting and I have found a lot of great instructions, although I recommend not looking at too many different instructions. I think Lion Brand instructions at their website is the best. I also found a video on youtube that showed how to do the loop, and the lady used her hand and then put the crochet hook in her hand upside down. You'll have to look for yourself. Try youtube they have a lot on expert village. Well Happy Crocheting to you! I haven't started yet but I think it will be a great thing to help stay frugal with so many different designs and patterns, plus they can be great as gifts! My mom used to crochet!

Your problem is tention. Remember that your left hand is your tention machine, while working the stitches with your right hand. Practise that chain until it looks even all the way through. If you'll just keep practicing that chain, you'll train your hand. Eventually, you'll be getting it and then you can go on to making other stitches. Until you get that tension right, nothing is going to work. :)

Hi Grace, I've been crocheting since I was a kid and stopped after some time. I just recently picked it back up and it took me some time to get the hang of it. Please understand, the chain are just links that looks like circles. Try doing a few stitches/rows and see what happens. It will take some time to get used to, but never give up. It's the most relaxing craft to do, especially after a hard day at work. Once you get the hang of it, it will all fall together. Start with something simple like a scarf, it's usually about 80 stitches and can go as short or as long as you like. The main think to remember is to always count. Because if you don't, you can end up with either a stitch too much or too short causing your pattern to be "uneven". I hope this helps some, good luck and have fun. Cheers, Gigglez

I do both crochet and knitting and the main difference, in case you haven't noticed already, is that you don't keep any of the stitches on the hook. Most crochet stitches involve hooking a piece of yarn through a loop or loops and dropping the loop or loops already on the hook. I hope that doesn't confuse you. I just picked up a book on knitting and I also know that they make the same book for crochet called "Teach Yourself Visually: Crochet". They have more photographs than the average crochet book. I mostly learned how to crochet using the Better Homes and Garden Crocheting and Knitting book and it had pretty good instructions, too. I'm also sure, as someone said, that there are some instructional videos on the web that you can access for free. But, I don't remember the exact sites. I think, maybe, Freecrochetpatterns.com might be one of them, but I don't know if that's the exact address. Good luck.
