Following Up On The Bumps and Scratching In My Attic, I Think I Have A Pet Owl!

... I came up with a theory, that this might be an owl. I'll explain my reasons for this...
Almost every night, an owl comes out front of my home, at between 2.30 and 3.00 a.m., approximately. It hoots a few times, and then flies away. Well, I hadn't heard this owl for about a fortnight, but, I had heard the loud flapping of seemingly heavy wings, scratching noises and grit and stuff falling from the eaves. I first heard this two or three nights after the Full Moon, so it would have been during the waning moon cycle. The first time, also, I was sitting at my computer, and it was outside the dining room window. It was so loud, I even pulled back the curtain to see if a bird had become trapped inside, but there was nothing. It made two or three attempts, and although I wondered why at three in the morning, a bird would be in flight, I presumed that it was a bird which roosts in my eaves.
Then, it was about four in the morning when I heard the scratching, and thuds, but they stopped when I banged on the ceiling. Then, the next early morning when I was in bed, I heard the same sound as I'd heard outside the dining room window, but this time, outside the bedroom window. In discussion, I remembered this, and I also remembered that I hadn't heard the owl in the past couple of weeks, so, I came to the conclusion that I might have a pet Barn Owl. So, I waited to see what happened after the Dark Moon.
Sure enough, the regular flying, scratching and bumping sounds stopped, for two nights. Then, with the New Moon, I heard the owl again, out front... hooting!
I've been reading up about the Barn Owl and I think there might be a possibility that they are nesting in my eaves. They're quite a small species, and breeding begins in April. So the timing would be about right. Their nest sites are usually in a tree or buildings, such as barns and derelict buildings, but also crevices in rocks and cliffs. So, if they can get into rock crevices, can they get into my eaves? It doesn't sound an easy task for them, and it takes a couple of attempts sometimes but the wing sound is loud enough to make me think it's a heavy bird. The British Barn Owl weighs between ten and sixteen ounces.
What do you think? Am I right in my assumptions, and if so, do you think it's a sign? There are several other things have developed too, which cause me to pause for thought, but at the moment, that's to be figured out. Right now, I'm thinking there's something more mystical to this, but I can't seem to get to the bottom of it just yet. However, it could just be a nesting owl. What do you think?

Hi there Darkwing, well it isn't a squirrel or a bat by the sound of things so you are probably right about it being an owl. Especially if you have seen it flying around at night.
How wonderful, although you probably don't think so with all the noise it is making etc., and the mess it is probably making! It would be great if you could get a camera there to watch it nesting and perhaps have little ones. Quite fascinating. We just have butterflies, little gekos and small birds here in the Dom Rep. Nothing as wonderful as a barn owl. Please keep us updated!

No... at first I thought it might be a bat as we have a lot of them around here, but the wing-flapping sounded feathery and heavy. It would be great if I could film it, but if there were lights outside to enable a camera to pick it up, it might be frightened off; the same goes for the loft, and that's only if I could find the space where it's nesting.
So, just have to wait and see what develops. If it isnesting, then they apparently lay their eggs singly, and two days apart, so that would account for some of the quiet nights. I'll certainly let you know how things progress.
Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution. Exciting, isn't it?

Well at least you have got an idea as to what is scratching in the loft (hee, hee) nothing too scary! I wonder if you could get a tv crew in from the BBC or something - they could film it in ultraviolet light or whatever it is they use - mind you they would probably be far messier and noiser than the bird(s)! So, no doubt, a bad idea... ho hum, please do keep us updated, I'm intrigued.

Yes, I feel better in suspecting it's an owl. I didn't much fancy the idea of sewer rats up there!
I'm of the opinion that this could be a spiritual sign, but whether it is or not, I'm not too worried about having it there. I love owls, and I feel quite honoured that they chose my eaves above everybody elses! In that vein, I don't think I want to disturb it, or them, by having a blundering team of BBC photographers hanging around. Besides, I like my privacy! Can you imagine having them outside your bedroom window all night! Nooooooo, I think I'll pass on that one, my friend!
I will certainly keep you updated on anything else I find out. The owl hasn't been up there this week, or at least, I haven't heard it. Maybe the young hatched and have flown now... who knows? Time will tell, my dear friend.

2 wit 2 woo. Is it not possible to speak to the owls to get to know them better. Or would you prefer to have an owl specialist to pop in and suss the situation out for you. Owls are a very wise bird and thier interlectual level is very high.
Having an owl as a friend can be a very good thing as a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Blessings my friend.

Once again I was being flippant with my response and you have put me in my place as usual with your extensive knowledge of wild life. I think I will have to tread carefully in future if I am to respond to your enjoyable postings.

Yes, I did gather you were being flippant my friend, and that was the best way I could answer you. The Owl is one of my favourite birds, and I have read up on it quite a bit, and so gained knowledge about it. There was a time before when I was concerned about the regular visits of an owl, too, but I'm at peace with this one, and quite honoured that he chose my eaves above all the others.
No need to tread carefully when responding to my discussions, my friend. We all need a little bit of humour in our lives, occasionally... it keeps us going. Take care, and don't stop responding!

LOL. Sounds like you have alot of sleepless nights! I would asume by the noises and such you are describing it very well could be an owl. I dont see why it couldnt get into a house. You must have a nice place in the eves that it likes. Maybe soon you will here the noises of baby owls. That would be neat. Let us know what happens ok. I would love to here more about it!

Yes, I did have a few sleepless nights trying to figure what it was. You see, there are workmen out front, upgrading the sewer and storm drain system, and I was afraid it might be migrating rats at first. But, I kept hearing the flapping of heavy, powerful wings, and my thoughts changed to the owl, which I hadn't heard for a while. The barn owl screeches, so I know that's what I hear at night. I'm pretty convinced now that my feelings are right. Of course, I'll keep you all up to date with any new findings.
Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution.

This is very interesting Darkwing, and mysterious.
Time will tell, but under your circumstances, I tend to believe if this is indeed an Owl, it relates to the more spiritual side and answers will be forthcoming. Whether it nests in the eaves (which would be just wonderful) or is just visiting you for a short time, I believe you to be truly Blessed and under protection. It's there for a reason and you will soon find out. I just can't wait to hear the rest of this story....xxxooo.

I agree with you, my dear friend. I feel comfortable knowing its there, and I believe it's there as a spiritual sign. The reason I think this, is because it only seems to home in on the waning Moon and we both know what that means. She is hereabouts, as She always is. As you say, time will tell.
Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution, my friend. It's great to have you back in the fold, and I hope all goes well with you. x

Not yet, my friend, but if my suspicions are right, there could be more development after the Full Moon, because it all seems to happen on the wane. As I said, I believe She is there, as she was in the beginning, and there's a spiritual message somewhere here. Time will tell, but we have to be patient!
Bring it on!!!
