Analog TV vs Digital TV

As most might know the anolog signals for TV broadcast will end as of February 2009. Meaning all TV stations will be sending out their signals digitally and not anologally. meaning a standard TV won't accept the new signals. You will either need a TV that accepts digital signals, a convertor box to accept the signal or a cable/sattelite provider that sends the digital signal through their boxes. Well the US has a coupn program for opurchasing the convertor boxes. It is a $40 coupon towards the purcahse of one box. A household can get up to 2 coupons. I sent for mine awhile back and recieved the coupns in the mail today. I priced the convertor boxes andf they are anywhere from $30 to $100 and more. So basically with this coupon you can get it free of charge except taxes is all. I plan on buying a new HDTV with the incentive checks or whatever they're called. My older TV will be in the basement and I will use the convertor box for that TV. to sign up to get your coupon(s) Thanks all. Here's the link.

No you won't need the box unless you have a TV not hooked to it.

Glad I could be of assistance. it's really not a coupon but more like a gift card for a convertor box only. Here is what they look like.

If you don't have your DishTV hooked to it then a
convertor is needed or a TV that is HDTV compatible.

My mom was showing me the newspaper clipping on this this past Monday when I stopped in to see her. She's already ordered 3 of these boxes using the coupons she got in the mail. Luckily, I don't have to being I have my dish network and have been getting digital tv for a while now.

Maybe some of the small private owned stations won't have the resources to accept the digital signal as well. I can't see why they wouldn't though. Have this friend try a different attenae maybe?

that sounds great, I on the other hand, live in canada and for us we don't go digital until 2011, my cable is digital service though so I don't think that I have anything to worry about.

I got my coupons for the converter boxes a while back. I am not sure if I will use them or not though. they may be expired now anyway. I am thinking about just buying new television sets for the warranty and all since they are old ones anyway. We bought a big screen television and it should be fine though. We will replace the smaller ones.

Another great option is to buy a tuner card for a computer and video card with svideo out if your current one doesn't have one. I don't know if you can use the coupon for the HD tuner card or not, but it makes sense that most of the electronics places would allow it if the government is vague on the situation.
There are a couple of reasons you might want to go this route. If you have a slightly older computer P3, celeron, or better and a 100GB or bigger hard drive you can make a very good DVR setup, which is a boon since most old VCR will not work with or without a converter box. Another reason is you can setup multiple feeds by using multiple tuner cards in a single machine to record multiple streams at once. The machine I will be building for my neighbors has 3 tuner cards (1 for every member of the family).
