The Olympics and the Torch

I have noticed a lot of controversy regarding the Olympics and people protesting the passing of the torch. I even saw where in one place the torch and the bearer had to be put into a bus for protection from the crowds. I understand why they are protesting. But the Olympic planning committee knows the unrest in the country they are allowing the Olympics to played in, so why do they choose a country where this is happening? What are your opinions on the Summer Olympics being held in China? Should the atheltics of the world be punished for something they have no control on and not be allowed to go to an event some of them have been practicing the majority of their lives for? Should the Olympic Committee be more selective when making this decision? Or should all countries be allowed to be in the running to host the Olympics?
