I have a friend who is having a problem getting her second computer to work. She has ATT internet provider and they are telling her she needs to purchase their router for $100! OUTRAGEOUS!! She has a router, it's a Rouch Router, so if you can provide any help, it would be so very much appreciated. She said her compuer works, but the second one will not connect (it's the kids computer). I tried to search the internet, but I didn't get much help. Thanks for any and all help ~Icy~

I have never heard of a rouch router and can't find a router by that brand on the internet so I'm afraid I cannont be a whole lot of help. I'm guessing Hardwired so the basic things to check are: Make sure your using CAT5e cable (basic LAN cable) Make sure your plugged into the right ports in the router (modem is connected to internet port and the computers are connected to the numbered ports) Can the computer see the router under the networking center? You will also need to check the second computers networking settings to make sure that it obtains the IP address automatically and that it obtains all the information automatically. (these will be under internet explorer under the tools and then internet options)

Then alls you have to do is to get into Internet Explorer or Firefox and go into the options and check a box that says obtain IP address automatically.

I don't know how to help you myself. I tried to look the information up online for you but alot of people just say it is a pain to do and that it is awful and they would never try to do it again. It must be very hectic to do. I'm sorry I could not help you either.

There is no need to buy their router. Is she sure the router she has works okay, has she tried all of the ports?

Hi icyorchid, No two PC should have the same IP number, did you just assign this or it was given it yo you by ATT? If one PC is say 192.168.1.1, the other one should be 192.168.1.2. If you change IP address it is a must to restart every unit even your router.

you should be able to use any router of any brand as long as the Internet provider uses a standard protocol such as PPOE static IP or dynamic IP. Just connect the router and configure it properly. Go to the IP of the router (192.168.x.1) and enter in your username and password, then configure the connection by choosing the correct protocol, any related information (such as hostnames or DNS servers) and save and reboot it.
