Using your teeth to open things!

My little granddaughter is doing this all the time. She will be three in June. I have warned her and tried to break the habit as I am afraid she will break off one of her teeth trying to pry off a lid or something. Last Sunday I went over to my son's for lunch and saw his wife standing there trying to remove a lid with her teeth! So I know now where baby got it from. Do you try to use your teeth to get lids and caps off from various containers or pens?

I do on various things such as pens but I cant stand children doing it. There teeth arent as strong as ours. I would mention it to your so that you dont approve of your grandchild using her teeth to open things and that she is copying this from her mum.
I would hate to be there if a child bit their tongue or their teeth came out due to using their teeth for opening things!!

Oh, am guilty! I do that since I was in elementary! I tend to open the lids by using my strong teeth but now, I stop doing that since it hurts haha! My teeth is complaining! But it would be better if your grand daughter will stop doing that. Cheers!

Yes, I have done this. I used to do it a lot more but I forced myself to stop! I was terrible about doing this when I was younger though!
Now I just hand it off to my husband if I can't get it open. More than likely he is the reason I can't open it to begin with! He is always turning the lids so tight I can't open them.
He tells me that he does this stuff so I have to ask him for help. That way he feels needed. I tell him to find another way! lol

Absolutely not! I have never understood people who do that. Never mind that it is bad for your teeth! That is the worst of it. But, it is also not sanitary. Who wants to eat something that you used your teeth to open? Who wants to borrow a pen from someone who used their teeth to remove the lid? With germs already easily spread from hand to surface to hand, why do we need to help germs spread even more? It is inconsiderate of the person who uses their teeth to open something that we will be ingesting. If they want to break their own teeth...so be it! I could care less! But, don't spread your germs to me by putting your saliva on something that you will be preparing for me to eat. Gross! Keep your teeth and your saliva to yourself. LOL!
Good luck trying to break your granddaughter of that habit. I hope you are successful. I hate to suggest that you scare her straight given her young age. And, who knows if she is even old enough to comprehend the potential damage to her teeth at her young age right not anyway but, maybe it is worth a try to find pictures of ugly teeth. Or, perhaps wait until she is a bit older and can comprehend the potential damage to her teeth. I think she is too young to get it right now. Just keep trying to get it through her head right now because it will be a harder habit for her to break in the future. And, if she is still doing it later on, give her visual proof of what can happen if we mistreat our teeth.
Good luck!

And a great step at that! At least she is keeping you in the back of her mind now when she does it out of sight. Eventually, you will be able to get through to her. Right now, you are building her consciousness about it and that is the first step to any healthy knowledge of right and wrong.
Keep it up! You'll break her eventually!

I also use my teeth but usually on caps or lids that are easy to open. Whenever something won't give in, I find something stronger. It's hard to replace real teeth.

i can't remember if this was a habit of mine when i was a kid but now, i surely don't use my teeth in opening things. i just think its very unhygienic. but lots of my cousins, nieces and nephews do this habit. even my three-year old nephew too! when he buys something in a small plastic, he would try to open it by himself using his teeth. it looks funny when he does it but i actually don't like it. he must have copied the habit from his cousins.

I usually use a tea towel if jar is awkward to get a better grip, in the depths of one of my kitchen drawers is a specially designed jar and bottle opener but I only rummage to find if all else fails. I have used my teeth on very rare ocassions but not something I usually do. At least now you know where your granddaughter picked the habit up from eh! Ellie :D

What you said reminds me a fruit which conains lots of sweet water. You must bite it severely until you can drink. As for using teeth to open things, I never do this unnecessary behavior.

When I finally would run out of options, opening things using my teeth - even when I have braces right now - is something that I must confess I do. But it is not something as though I try to bite and pull the thing away. It puts too much pressure on the teeth and that is where I would think it is bad. When I use my teeth to open up something, I try to check on the possible way to cut a "tear" angle on it and have it torn down apart. Pulling it away is really not an option for me because it will surely double my agony. Thus, I try to find a certain technique in doing it.
And yes, I usually do that when I open things in plastic or strong paper wrappers. I don't do that on bottles or cans or certain lids. Your granddaughter is one little exhibitionst there, nah? lol. Guess it's true, try to break her bad habit because that is way too much for primary teeth to handle.

i do it when times need to open certain soft drink battles and you have no opener so have no choice but to use the teeth...no worries at all if you had stronger teeth though..

Wow! Your granddaughter is too young for that habit. I'm already 34, and the most that I did with my teeth is to open a pen cap, and that was a long time ago. I never attempted to open anything else with it. I see people open soda bottle caps and often wonder how come they don't damage their teeth. I don't know if you have heard of it, but there are also those who can remove the husk of a young coconut (imagine how thick those are) using their teeth!
I hope your granddaughter doesn't grow up with that habit. But knowing that she observes it from her mother, it's going to be really hard.

No way! However my husband does for things like ice cream and candy wrappers. And sure enough our oldest does it too now. It doesn't help that our son is autistic, which makes it even harder to break this irritating habit. I wish my husband would set a better example and not do these things. Plus it drives me batty!

I used to open bags of chips using my teeth... but never to get off lids or caps... that sort of thing is quite dangerous for the teeth... and at present... i only use my teeth to open platic if there is no available scissors around... i once saw my daughter do this... and i realized that she got it from her grandparent... since she rarely see me do it...

I only use my teeth as a last resort to remove caps from bottles that have corks like those soda bottles. I never use my teeth to open any other type of lid or even those cans. If I can't get the can lid to pop up I just use a can opener lol. I don't use my mouth to take off the cap off my pen either unless my hands are filled and I have to do it. I am also a bit afraid of my teeth chipping or anything. Even though my dentist has told me I have really strong teeth. YAY
