I'm planning on getting a new puppy. I 'm having a hard time deciding on the breed. I want a good guard dog, but one that will get along well with my Chow.

I don't know which dogs get along with Chows but Dobermans, and German Shepherds are good watch dogs.

What breed is Chow? As Im wondering if some breeds clash.
As far as I know, size doesn't necessarily matter for a dog to be a good guard dog. Then again, size can scare some would be robbers.
There are a number of sites that give you a guide on choosing a puppy. Here is one:

I'd say alot of it depends on the living conditions. If you live in an apartment with limited yard space then I'd go with a smaller breed. If you live somewhere with a backyard then I'd say go with a larger breed. I've seen some small dogs that are furiously protective and some very large dogs that are absolute babies. I wish you luck in finding one that can make a home with you and yours.

I live in the country and I have a huge backyard, and a lot of room in my house, so I could get a larger dog, like a German Shepard, but I love little Beagles too. I'm not sure if they scare anyone away. I'll probably just end up getting the first dog I find, as I think they are all lovable.
Thanks.

If I could get a dog where I live I would go to the local shelter and ask which dog needs to be adopted the most and take that dog. There are so many poor dogs with no home that need love and would love to protect you and your family. I would take the Chow with you and let him decide if he likes the other dog and then you family would be complete and a needy dog would have a family.

I've had dogs from the shelter before, and they were all good dogs. It's always hard to go through that, trying to pick one out when there are so many that need homes. My dog loves other dogs, so I don't think I'll have a problem with her, but I would like to get a puppy, or at least a young dog so it will get used to her.
