I have a 1 1/2 year old female pit. She is a brendal. Well lately she has been playing outside with my other dog which is a little weenie dog. Well they usually get along great but lately my pit has been sticking the little dogs head in her mouth. i dont know what to do about it because i dont want her to get really aggressive towards my little dog. When i see her do it i like spank her (not hard) and tell her no. but it just seems to keep going on . What should i do about this so nothing bad happens?

I have a pit and a jack russel. When the pit starts to play too rough I spray her with water from a squirt bottle. Since she doesn't like water this works well.

Sounds like she is just trying to play, but I can understand why you would be worried. It might be a good idea to only let them play together when you can supervise them. You might try giving her a squirt of water in the face or some other unpleasant experience (besides spanking, which apparently isn't going to work) when she does this.

It seems like play behavior to me. Did she grow up with your other dog? She could be trying to tell the little dog to stop nipping so much! Clearly, tapping her to get her attention isn't working. Remember, Pit Bulls have a pretty high pain tolerance. I use a spray bottle or one of those Gatorade sports bottles that have a spout. Coupled with a firm "No!" this works miracles on my Pit Bull! He has an annoying (funny) habit of licking the cats all over. This results in the cats double teaming him and kicking his butt, which, I've recently discovered, he absolutely loves! I spray all three of them with cold tap water, though, to keep him from getting his eyes scratched out. End of boxing match!

she actually grew up by herself. For the past oh i would say year or so she had the little dog. But she was here first and then came the little dog.

Please don't ever hit a pitbull. These dogs require special handling. There's plenty of information to read and learn about these fascinating dogs. Please understand the plight of a pit. They do have the ability to fight and kill. They can also be gentle and loving. Do not ever put two male dogs together. My son had two pits. Sparing all details, the two dogs were let out together, and one killed the other in a battle that raged over 45 minutes. No one could separate the dogs. Sad and tragic, Please be careful and educated if you want to keep your pit and other dogs and people safe. I'm not saying pits are killers, but they do kill on occassion. Owning a pit involves dedication, patience and kindness. Take care of your family, your dog and everyone you know by learning to be a responsible owner.

It sounds like I really stepped on your toes! Sorry if I came on too strong. All I could think about was my son's dogs and maybe my emotions took control of my words. I've learned so much and I worry that if I don't leave words of caution when I read stories about pits, something might happen and I could have prevented it. If my words don't fit your situation, maybe someone else who comes across this discussion will benefit from my remarks. Please excuse me if I implied there was anything lacking in your personal handling of your dog.

Spank him really hard and make your "no" firm and loud. I did it with my mean dog and now he has learn to behave.

If I were you, I would keep the two dogs away from eachoher. I am not sure how one would actually get the dog to stop this behaviour, but i the dogs are not allowed to be together, then the big dog can't hurt the little one.

I don't want to be prejudiced but how on earth did you get into your idea to mix a bit publl with a small dog? Pitbulls were breed to fight! It is in her nature! By hitting her I don't think that you are going to achieve anything rather than make her more aggressive. © ronaldinu 2008

Spanking her will achieve nothing, monkey see, monkey do! Sometimes it can be hard for the inexperienced owner to tell the difference between play and aggression in dogs. Given that she is a pit then it is unlikely that she is being aggressive unless she is inflicting great harm on the other dog. If it is aggression, you need to decide what is the cause. Are both dogs female? Which dog was in the house first? Have you trained her? To sit, lie, stay, do an emergency stop whilst running toward you, walk to heal etc. These are the beginnings of training your dog. all the best urban

I'm an owner of many pits and I'm sure she does not mean any harm (play). If you want to control it just continue with telling her no (do not hit her unless necessary this will create jealousy) If she does not listen say no and move her away play is over. This way she learns to play nice or no play. Pit bulls are personalised dogs so they get attached to one owner and can become very possessive.
