with all the problems that humanity faces in life, would it not be a good idea to make all religous belief a purely personal thing... this would mean no religous practises in schools or at work...though it could be taught as a subject encompassing all faiths... children would no longer be indoctrinated by parents into a faith because of who they where born to, instead they would have the choice of believing and participating at an older age... much like the right to vote.western society prides itself on basic freedoms yet children are often not given the right to not participate in the beliefs of their parents and as adults become aware that to express any disbelief causes upset and grief not only in the family but also the wider community.this leads to a hypocritical way of life where behavour is tailored to who is in front of you and not how you actually are..

Nice theory except for one human frailty.
When we know we are right we want everyone to think as we do.
In fact, it is our duty to do so to save them from themselves. We are doing them a favour even if they don't realise it!
Missionary zeal - the curse of all religions. You will not get rid of it.

Hmmm, I don't see that you can protect children from something their parents and/or large chunks of society believe is for their own good, even if you and I don't agree with them.

At my highschool we don't practice any religion because we have students of more than one religion, But in my old school we did practice the jewish holidays. I think that a school of mixed religions should not practice and thus will not hurt any students of other beliefs. In addition to that, practicing a religion at school may influence someone to believing it and I am against people who "make" other people convert to their religion(brain wash, etc...).

sounds like a good school.. but you do not mention if you practice the faith of your parents or have you been given the right to choose? schools which are denominational have a captive audience and by there very nature cannot promote freedom of thought and personal chioce as this will be against the whole purpose of their exsistance... good luck with your studies..

I firmly believe that my children, should they wish to, have the right to make their own choices on which religion they wish to follow and I will support them totally. Having no religion myself it is not something that they see a lot of although im happy for them to be taught at school and obviously at home if they have questions I will do my best to help them find the answers they require I can find it easy to be objective though as I have no religion I feel my children should follow.
For some poeple I think their religion is important to them and they want their children to be a part of it also there is nothing wrong with that I dont think as long as at the same time they are supportive of any desire their children might have to choose a different path.
