If I had my own website......

I worked for months on putting together a website in honor of Marilyn Monroe who I have always admired. I got stuck though when it came to the web hosting and domains and all of that faldera. I just didn't understand it, so I gave up. If you could develop your own web site, what would you chose to use as your subject matter? Would it be personal and all about you, your children and family, would it be business related or if you aren't interested at all, why not?

The only time I have thought about having my own web site was when I was going to have my own shop online!! I have never thought about doing one for any other reason as I just never really see the point of it. So if I ever do get around to it, I expect I would just try and start a shop of some kind.

I actually started my own shop online, but lost interest very quickly and until now forgot all about it. LOL.

Ha, you sound like me, I tend to lose interest in things really quickly and soon find something else that I think is better, a few weeks later I lose interest in that too. I am surprised actually that I have lasted as long as I have here!

I belonged to other social networking sites and lost interest within a couple of months. This is much more rewarding.

I do have my own website that I am building to accompany a future book that I am writing about South Oxfordshire and Salisbury pub and inn signs. It is very much under construction although to date it has 120 "hits". I managed to buy a dedicated and appropriate site name as well as get a year's hosting for $20. I use Apple's iWeb to build the site. This is very easy - it has to be for me - everything is already there for you. That said, it hasn't all been too easy. I took ages actually getting teh thing on the web, and now that it is I can't remember what I did to get it there! I am not a technophobe. Just useless!

Being from Oxfordshire, I would love to get a look at it. What is the name of the site. Can I look it up?

If you want me to help you set up your own website... I'll be happy to do so. I am just about to change of hosting provider... and I have found one which was recommended to me from a good source. And it is only $AU50.00 a year... which is about as cheap as it gets. My current website is about Motor Racing in Australia. I have some very rare home made DVDs which I am selling.

I lost the website I had created when I reformatted my laptop, but I have been thinking about creating a new one and if you could help me when I have decided what direction I want to go in with it, I would really appreciate your help. That would be really nice of you, as a matter of fact.

My hubby actually did one for my son from the year he was born to now. Because all our family are overseas we thought it would be a great way for them to keep in touch and see how their grandson/cousin is doing in his life. We post pictures, blog about day to day issues, new things he has learnt, achievements, shout outs and sorts. Actually it is more of a blog type website than a standard one.

Thats a really cool idea. I know their are sites you can join that are similar, but to have your own would be even better.

my son has a website he has worked on for years and now just ocassionally adds to it. I would love to do somethinglike thatbut do not know if I have the expertize to do it. I thinkit would be personal and probably have something to do with poetry and with creative writing and about my little girl who was only with us for eight brief years.

There are many programs that make it real simple to develop your own website and alot of them are free. It just gets a bit more complicated when you get into domains and web hosting. At least it did for me, but it sounds like your son could help you with that. Sorry to hear about your daughter.

I actually have a few websites. One is listed in my profile that has how I earn money on line and to inform others on it. I have one with all my creations on it which include wallpapers, screensavers and websets. I have one that is dedicated to tv shows that deal with the strange and unusual. Another one I have is a website competition for other sites to compete at. Then I have one about my causes I feel strongly about and lastly a vote exchange club for people on topsites and website competitions. They keep me busy that's for sure. I do my hosting through godaddy.com but I started out on free sites like tripod.

Actually, I'm a web designer, so ideally, I think it would be appropriate for me to have my own website. My website is about my profession. It's basically for people to know about my services and contact me. My web design services are pretty affordable. Please do check it out and give me your reviews about the design. http://www.ewds.org. Thanks.

If you're serious about having your own website you need to sign up with GDI. You can have your own website plus 10 different e-mail addresses for just $10/month after a free trial. You can also earn a good residual income by referring others to this program. Please PM me if you're interested. Annie

I have been thinking about developing a website but as I am new to all this I am yet to seriously consider it. I am sure I would not base the site on any thing that is personal. I'll just have to sit down and think long and hard about what I will base the site on but you post has taken me one step closer to start doing so. (lol)

It would be a family site. I have family all over the nation. It would be neat if they could email me there pictures and I could post them. We all could keep in touch that way.

I have a business website that I recently put online. It is for my VA business. I posted it through Yahoo and it was actually pretty easy. I also had to use a site builder, which I don't like. I originally designed my site with FrontPage and I loved it, but Yahoo doesn't support FrontPage extensions, so I had to use their site builder. It is basically a bunch of templates, you just add your own content. They have lots of tools you can use to add different things, track page hits, etc. I won't be using them when it comes time to renew, for the simple fact that I liked my original design better. You can check my site out at www.the-cunning-touch.com. I also use Facebook, MySpace, MustLoveWine.com, Blogger.com, and of course, MyLot.

I've had a couple of my own, and they are usually about something I am interested in that I think others will be too. I am still running my horse racing site which I post on Blogger. It helps thjat I design websites on the side, so I can pretty much do it all myself. I am inn the process of building a site right now that will be devoted to horror fiction and artwork

I have thought of a few websites from time to time. I have one that I would love to do but like you said I don't really know how to make it happen. I was wondering what is it about Marilyn Munroe that you admire? I didn't think anyone really got to know her on a personal level apart from the movies; did they? I sure would like to know because I did enjoy her in the roles she played and wondered what she was like as a person?

kbourgerie, It sounds like you've done the coding and the website is ready to "go live" but you don't know how/where to host, or how to purchase a domain name? If that's the case, the hardest part is already done! First, go to namecheap.com, or one of hundreds of domain name registers and select a name that isn't taken yet. Personally, I always try to get a name the ends with .com instead of the others such as .net, .org, etc. Next, pick a host. There are tons and tons, such as 1on1.com, godaddy.com, you could even become your own! I use totalchoicehosting.com and I selected a reseller package. This gives me TONS of space and bandwidth and an unlimited number of domains to host. My main site is kenpotts.com and myself and my family use it daily to keep in touch. There's so much you can do with a website nowadays that it can seem overwhelming sometimes. Just keep it simple and let it grow with you. Hope that helped.
