Thankfully neither of us ever worked shift work, although with the farm it was up early mornings and if we were irrigating then my husband would be out checking the water on and off all night but that was only for about 4 nights a fortnight. I think that people who do work shift work, if it is the same hours that is, get used to it but of course it can play havoc with the social and family life. In the past we have had friends who have worked shift work. We still have one friend who works shift work but different days during the week, and it can be a bit annoying because I often don't know whether to phone or not in case she is sleeping. Plus our son informed me tonight that he will be going onto shift work in a fortnight. He will be working from 3.00 p.m. till he finishes, which can be anywhere between midnight and 5.00 a.m., so this means we will be tiptoeing around the place till he gets out of bed. The last time he did this I just moved things to the caravan so we could have coffee, breakfast etc there rather than disturb him. How will we cope? Oh well when he gets out of bed he generally has breakfast, so we will have something with him then. He will leave for work between 1.00-2.00 p.m. as it is an hour's drive from his place. Last time he worked like this I would cook the evening meal and put some aside for him and he would have it when he came home. This year we have agreed that food will be put aside and he will take it in to work and reheat for his evening meal rather than eating a big meal whenever he gets home.

I used to work shift work I think it is very hard for the people around you but it is hard on the person themselves as sometimes the outside world doesn't work in with your sleep patterns and you have no right to complain about simple little things like people mowing their lawns ot kids play in the street..it is a hard life really.

My husband works nights and has since I've known him. We've been married 8 years. I don't sleep as well when he isn't home. Sometimes I even stay up until he gets home so I can sleep with him. Some nights I miss him so much that when he heads for work I tear up. sighs.
