What will supermarkets be like in 100 years?

I was reading an article regarding supermarkets and a study that was done in 1900 about how supermarkets would be like in 100 years (i.e. in 2000). Many of the predictions were right such as having prepakage meals (frozen, soups, for example) and also having milk and other perishables delivered to many supermarkets instead of just one location. So, I ask my fellow myLotters, what how will supermarkets be like in 100 years (around the year 3000)? Okay, so we may not be alive to see it, but it's still cool to think about it. Here are some things I thought would happen:--Cashiers will no longer exist as the customer will scan their groceries and the machine will verify purchases, take payment, coupons, etc. --Options will exist to have the items delivered to the home and/or ready to be picked up (i.e. call ahead an order). --Technology will evolve that will allow food to be dehyrdated/frozened to 1/4 of the size. What are some of your ideas? Let us know... Thank you. Pablo

i would say that everything would be in pressure packs and most of the food that we are going to buy are going to be rich in nutrients. it will be ordered and it's either it would be delivered or for pick up and we won't be carrying any cash where everything will be virtual money which we also have to work for it.

I think your right...I think that cashiers will be a thing of the past. I think you will pay with a thumbprint or eye scan and like you said things will be dehydrated/frozen to 1/4 of the size. I did read a story the other day where all food was replaced completely by a pill that you took three times a day...so who knows maybe that is what it will come to. Do away with grocery stores, trucking food around the country, cooking, the whole thing and all you do is take a pill three times a day. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Hey twoey68..wow I didn't think about a pill. I think it would be cool if we could have a pill that when hydrated made the food be cooked. I don't think I could just take the pill because I love the teaste of food, right? :) Pablo

I think they will be alot different. I would not even be surprise as the meals all being made up with the correct portions and not things you can fix yourself. I don't believe there will be cashiers either. They are already weeding them out.

Wow, you are right--perhaps things with the correct portions so we don't get fat. And how about no junk food as well? :) Pablo

well,i am a network engineer.so i do believe in that the supermarkets will not exist in 100 years.because i do think online shopping is more convenient than the current way.you are able to search a lot of online shopping websize nowadays(most of them can offer an very good service and made you very satisfied with what you bought from it). What i imagine is below-- the time you live in 3000 century,it does not need to drive for three hours car to shopping.because the people will move to countryside for living and there will being build thousands of large community for people lives.in the centre of this community there will be some functional factory(we call it factory, because all of products it make in pipelining way.the crop will planting in a place which is specially building for it.the temperature will adjust as the kind of crop need.you are no long need to buy something which freezed for keep quality. in this way,for example,if you need to buy some vegetable for preparing a wonderful lunch.the only thing you need to do ,you can walk towards the digital screen which put in the wall.and press the picture (it is a botton too).and choice the vegetable you want to buy,of cause ,because it using a kind of new technology, you can sniff the smell of this vegetable! the price and detail of this kind of vegetable you watched will list on its right.the end of you finished choice, one thing you need to do is just waiting ,until someone will sent it to you !(within one or three hours).

Wow--I never thought about it like that. Your idea nopain would make it much easier and make the supermarket be like a warehouse where they are shipped out to us (kind of like the postal services). I never thought about that, but it seems like it could work similar to the post office (one central location that sends off items to other people). Thank you for your input. Pablo
