Why Do Kids Stick Things Up Their Nose?

Yesterday my 4 year old decided to stick a Tic-Tac up his nose. He screamed and I was driving at the time, stopped immediately grabbed him out of his chair but I couldn't see what the problem was, he was screaming and I am thinking what is up. Then he pointed and I realised, luckily as it was a sweet it started melting and I was able to get back down and out, I told my mum this morning and she said you did the same when you were little with a peanut but we had to get a doctor to get it out. Have your children ever done this and if they have what did they stick up thereas it seems quite common. It eally frightened me and I don't know where he go the pack of wsets either and I tend not to buy small object ones. Main thing is he is ok now and it scared him so I don't think he will attempt to again, bless. Ellie :D

I just can't help but to remember our youngest brother (he's now a hotel supervisor) way back in time when we were kids, who also stuck a button up in his nose. He cried and wailed that my mother really panicked. When my mother tried to pull it out herself by using a puller, my brother who was still six at that time, was so petrified by the sight of the small instrument. Because of his frantic, he sneezed out the stuck button from his nose to everybody's relief!
I just can't comprehend it why really kids would stick things up inside their nostrils, except inside the mouth because it's their way of being curious and taste the object..to smell it though, you don't have to stick it up inside, right?
Happy posting!

This is so true, it is a thing we all do. I remember swallowing a small sixpence myself, my parents were told to let nature take its course, which indeed they did

I can't understand it either but a lot of them do, apparently when I was my sons age it was a peanut and they had to call the local doctor to come round and remove it and I never did it again after that so hopefully after this lesson with the tic tac my son won't either. Ellie :D

Hi Littleowl - Oh how so very true. Even my youngest is four already and it only seems like yesterday he was a newborn so yes we must treasure these memories. In fact today I had just finished hoovering and guess what he walked through the lounge dropping pieces of cholcate cake all over it. I said you know I have just hoovered why didn't you eat at kitchen table and he looked at me with his big blue eyes and said but muummy it was an accident and wnet and got dustpan and brush, but I was growling when I first saw. LOL Ellie :D

I do not know why but I know that they also put everything in their mouth! You have to watch them carefully every minute! It is easier to watch them on the bus and train then it is when you are driving! I did not like that, driving with young kids in the car, between the chances of them doing something stupid like that, or listening to them fight over silly stuff, it was not always pleasant to drive anywhere!

Oh trying to drive a car with arguing is definately not pleasant, when I heard him suddenly scream I immediately pulled over and couldn't understand what he was screaming for that was the panic moment but when I did realise I dealt with and manged to get sweet out. Strange when he was very little he was so good about not putting things in his mouth so perhaps thats why he done the nose one yesterday eh!. Ellie :D

Yes we have had this, in fact it was all quite horrible. My son who is now 6 was at the time 4 when we started to notice a foul smell coming from his nose, I took him to the doctors who gave him some antibiotics for an infection. He took the antibiotics for a week and the smell seemed to go, but a few days later it was back and it was really bad, it was so bad that I had to hold my breath everytime I went near him, and so bad that people at school had noticed and so I kept him off. I took him back to the doctors and she looked at it, shone a light up it and then took a swab, then she prescribed him some more antibiotics. So a week passed and the smell was still there, I got the results of the swab and it was showing an infection of some sort so back to the doctors we went and more stronger antibiotics were prescribed for yet another week. Bearing in mind that the smell by now is foul and he is off school for now the third week. So he takes the antibiotics and they are not doing nothing, and I kept saying there has to be something up his nose, so I had a look, I got the big powerful torch we had and shone it up his nose and I could see something up there I was sure of it!! So I got on the phone to the doctors and said I wanted another doctors opinion, as I was convinced he had something up his nose, he was starting to get a bad chest and he was getting really down because no one would go near him. So we went to the doctors again and saw another doctor, he looked up my sons nose and immediately shouted for the nurse, when the nurse came in he made her look up his nose, and asked what she could see and the nurse said there was definately something up there. The doctor said "yes that is what I thought, how on earth could the other doctor miss that, his nose is totally blocked!" He could not believe how long this had been going on and immediately phoned the hospital who told us to take him straight up. I could not go as I had 3 other children to look after, but my hubby took him, they were only there about an hour and when they took the thing out of his nose, it was an inch long piece of black foam!!!! As soon as it was taken out the smell went! He got over his ordeal very quickly and every so often we refer to him fondly as pongo!!!

Pongo, aaah bless his little heart. This sounds like an horrific ordeal that you all went through because a doctor neglected to notice or even check this could have been the reason. Well done you for getting another doctors opinion. Even the first one should have questioned when antobiotics didn't work, ridiculous. I am so pleased it was eventually sorted and relieved it didn't develop into a much more serious infection if left unchecked. With my son I knew almost immediately and was able to deal with instantly especially as it was a sweet he had put up there. Why they do it I just don't know, a 1" piece of foam is quite a large item to shove up there eh! Glad all eneded well and thank you for sharing. Ellie :D

OMG another incidence. My son, put small sticker bindis all over his face. He was just decorating suddenly a few went into his nose as he sniffed them. I was able to get 3 out. The remaining two went inside as another lady just blew in one of the nostrils to get it out. I got so wild with her as she did that without my consent. Got scared to the core and rushed him to the doc. The doc made a general checkup and gave a big lecture as to why you should not blow into kids nose. As he was our family friend he understood that it was not my mistake. He gave my son some medicines and just asked me to observe him for 2 days. If he had any sweelling or smelly nose, I have to rush him. If he got a fitful cough or constant cold, then too I should rush him. But if it had gone into the food pipe and got into the stomach, it will definitely come out in the stools, he assured. Luckily, I think it went into his food pipe as he didnot get any other symptoms.

My son put a big sized Bindi. I am doubting coz when asked he sasdi he has put in the nose .he sneezed once i searched the bed the room and evrywhere for that bindi of mine. took him to thea child specialist and ENT doc. who examined him and said no signs of anysuch thing. he was completely normal and playful.I checked his stool but didnt see anything there. I just wonderwhere could the bindi go. He however got cold the next morning. His dad had flu so,probably he got that cold from his father.I am not able to understand that if be convinced that it might have passed in the stool coz he had loose motion .

Why do adults stik things up their... no just kidding...
I guess its out of curiosity.. They will only learn from their mistakes. I guess the only thing we can do is to keep an eye on them to make sure that mistake will not permanantely damage them

when I was a kid I stuck a dime up my nose and it was really hard to get out but my grandmother finally got it out and then told everyone about it and I was so embarrassed never tried that again.
I think kids just like to fill empty holes, like putting sand in a pail.

luckily we kept the kids away from small objects for just this reason. Why this is he case I just dont know but i would imagine its all part of kids exploring their own body. Yes it scares them, yes its all part of growing up. Thankfully he is ok

Hi Eskarena, I really don't know why they do these things either, your daughter is lovely but I bet can be a bit mischievious so best to keep small things out of reach and out of harms way. I think one of my daughters friends must have been in the back of the car and dropped the sweet. I don't know why he put it up his nose but it is something I don't think he'll be attempting again bless as it did hurt and frighten him. Ellie :D

I'm not sure why kids like to stick things up their noce. I am glad that everything is okay now though. Your child may have been anle to blow their nose also and get it to come out of there alot quicker too. I'm glad he realised that is not something that you should do. I bet he never does it again either. Ouch!

Hi Raydene as I have read this I have just said to my son 'you know the other day when you put the sweetie up your nose, you must never put anything in you ears either or your mouth that you are not supposed to' and in his words of wisdom age 4 'he said mum I know that I learnt that yesterday' bless. Dear Ellie,
Some children are very naughty. Now when my son was about the same age, put a piece of rubber ( Eraser which he had cut into a small bit ) into his ear. I didn't know anything about it at all. My husband was away on tour. He was expected only three days later.
Later about 6pm in the evening, that too Calcutta gets darker by four and five in the winter evenings. I had to take him to the hospital because I couldn't see where it was. I was also very young and no elder with me to help also. Our doctor was there at his clinic. He took it out with the help of tweezers, which then struck me that I could have also done, if I had not panicked. Once he put a jasmine flower into his nose but I saw him doing it and immediately pulled it out. My son was very very naughty.
God Bless

When it is your own child you sometimes do tend to panicc but the main thing is the eraser is out and your son well, I think most children do do this at some stage when they are young and don't think is is so much naughtiness than them experimenting bless. Thanks for sharing. God bless. Ellie :D

Now that he is software engineer he tells me that he liked experimenting and used to do these things for fun. The worst experiment of his is to put his finger into the electric point and getting a shock of his life. Even now he is scared of electricity and will not have anything to dotill he has the main off.

I don't know why they do it, but it seems like they all do. With my son, it was candy corn. Strange, 'cause that's pretty big to go up a little guy's nose.
When we were kids, my brother and sister didn't put things up their noses. Instead, they ate coins. My sister almost choked on two nickels.

Mouths, ears, noses anything thing they can put things in they will eh! I was lucky that my son even from very young never put anything non edible in his mouth and I suppose even the sweet up the nose was edible too eh! LOL. I was lucky that it melted enough for me to get out without a doctors visit. Ellie :D

Awh bless Ellie hun, I did chuckle at your post and I'm sorry, I know it was very scary for you at the time. I have heard this so many times over the years from my friends and relatives of their kids shoving sweets and small toys up their noses and even penny coins. God knows what satisfaction they get from doing such a stupid thing but they're kids and until it's happened once they don't know how painful and ridiculous an idea it is! Kids even shove things into their ears so watch out for that one. But I guess your lil un knows now not to do that again as he "nose" (sorry awful pun I know) from first hand experience that it damn well hurts! xx

nose, excellent that made me giggle. I was more worried over the fact that initially I didn't know why he was screaming and he was screaming that much obviously in pain but couldn't tell me. Once I realised I calmed and knew as it was a Tic-Tac it wouldn't be a hospital visit. He certainly nose LOL now though. We all have to learn through experience eh! Will be on look out for the ear one. Ellie :D

My granddaughter just stuck a rubber band up her nose and they had to take her to the doctor because they couldn't get it out! But when she was in the doctors office she sneezed and it came out....would have saved them a bunch of money if they had just taken the pepper out of the cupboard! Anyway I think most kids do it! LOL...my sister stuck a pea up her nose when we were little and it rotted in her nasal passages...she stunk really bad....she got a trip to the doctors office too and my brother stuck an eraser in his ear...another office call! LOL

It does seem like most of them do it, it beats me as to why. I was lucky with my son as I dealt with it quite quickly without a hospital trip and also the fact in was a sweet it was melting and coming out anyway, my initial concern was why he was suddenly screaming. Your sisters pea episode sounds really yukky though, poor girl. Don't think my son will be doing it again though eh! Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Well I currently do don't have any kids of my own. But I do have a funny story to tell about my husband. He had told me when he was younger he stuck a crayon up his nose. I was trying not to laugh at him about it, but it was just funny. Especially because my mother in law had told me the story when I came down to meet her for Christmas. And the fact that he even remembered what color the crayon was that he had stuck up his nose. What makes it even funnier to me, since you said your son is 4, my husband was 4 when he did it. Maybe that is the age to where kids start getting suspicious about objects and placing them up their nose. I don't know if I did, my parents never told me anything about that, other me picking my nose, but I'm sure every little kid has done that.

My daughter done this when she was about 3. She stuck a screw with a rubber washer on it up her nose. And whatever we did we could not remove it. Wasn't too sure what she had stuck up there at first, as she came and told me that she put something up her nose. So we ended up taking a trip to the hospital. They removed it with no problem. Now we can look back and laugh at it. But i still have no idea why my daugther did it.

Beats me why they do it too but it does seem quite common, once I had realised what my son had done and what it was he had stuck up there I could sort easily enough without the hospital trip. Glad they got it out alright from your daughters nose. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

I'm not too sure why kids do this, maybe it's just a feeling out of curiousity? Or maybe they like that panic feeling? I'm lucky that my son has not done this but I sure had the experience with my younger brother when we were kids.. he would stick things up his nose all the time. When we would stay at my Aunt's place for the weekend she had a game called Mastermind and he would love to stick the game peices up his nose, and also peanuts!
Hopefully your son's experience is not repeated but when it came to my brother he was fearless!

I hoping it won't be repeated either, frightened me until I realised what it was and that I could deal with it myself and he seemed very sorry and sore after so chances that he won't are high unlike your fearless brother. My daughters never did anything like this but I did as a child and I am pleased to hear that you have also been lucky with your son too. Ellie :D
