UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has informed China that he will not attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in August due to a scheduling conflict. What are your comments...

Because of the recent emotional upsurge following many random but worldwide protests accompanying the Torch relay, and the many random but worldwide protests concerning China's human rights records and its nasty image in dealing with Tibet and the Dalai Lama, it is likely that Ban Ki-moon's simple regrets be interpreted as a loaded statement of disappoving the-way-China-has-been-handling-situation. But I choose to simply see it as a metaphysical incapacity (read: nothing can exist at the same place at the same time) due to an earlier-arranged Ban Ki-mooon schedule. Honestly, I don't want to contribute to the already growing stress this supposedly heartwarming Olympics is giving the world over some reasons which can be discussed given proper time and venue.

Nice to see you reply so promptly and I respect your opinion. I think its high time to check the human rights violations all over the world. What would you say?

Definitely, definitely high time to put these issues on the table for serious discussion. No doubt about it. But Olympics is not the sort of event or venue into which these has to be done. UN I'm sure holds specific conferences for these. I'm sad to see the transcendental and noble ideals of the Olympics are undermined by people whose out-of-place protests renders this whole event reduced to a political issue. It is as if we cannot discuss this in the proper time, and in the proper place, in fairness to the atheletes and the world which wants to see all countries represented.
