Getting Started with Etsy

I am signing up with Etsy to sell my crafts online (you have no idea how big those student loans are). I'm starting with my Alien Yarn buddies -- see related discussion. I am adding a purple and green one. Any advice to getting started? Thanks.

I just started selling on Etsy and I agree with taking good pictures. I don't know about listing your items all at once, but that sounds like a good idea. It's also good to visit the chatroom and forums now and then because people become more aware of you. A lot of people say that sales can be slow, but profitable, so don't be surprised if you get a lot of page views and not a lot of sales right away. But, you can leave items in your shop for four months and it's cheap to list there, so there's no worries.

I've no experience of selling on Etsy, but wanted to wish you good luck :-) A adore looking at the crafts on Etsy, and marvelling at how clever some people are!

I've been selling on Etsy for about 2 years (http://effulgentcrafts.etsy.com). I don't make a ton of money on there, but I do enjoy it. I think etsy is the perfect platform for crafters to get thier stuff out there. I know without etsy I might never have gotten up courage to try to sell my items. People there are really supportive and have given me some great tips on how to promote myself. Plus now I can sell year round instead of just at fairs in the winter time. Unlike ebay most of the people who shop at etsy are looking for hand made goods and are willing to pay for them. Rather than the ebay folks who always want a deal. If you are thinking of selling your stuff, check it out. It's a great community.

Exactly. I don't mind spending a bit more money to buy something of good quality on Etsy, but on eBay it seems to be all about price.

Twilight, I hearted your shop. I LOVE the Monopoly hotel earrings. As someone who played the game a lot as a kid, those are too perfect.

I have never heard of Etsy. I have crafts that I would like to sell, but Ebay just isn't working for me. Could you send me the link?

etsy.com It's really easy to get started. Search around MyLot and see how many people are posting about their etsy store. Let me know if you sign up.

This is a great discussion. And great tips were given. I'm still kind of new to etsy. I've been selling on etsy for almost a month now., but I haven't sold anything yet. I just did my first treasury a couple of days ago. I try to promote as much as I can in the forums and on treasuries. I on Monday I will have my Grand Opening sell, so check it out. I will be hearting you all, heres my shop name if you would like to heart me: jesscreations.etsy My student loans are pretty big too. Good luck!

What is a treasury? I saw it referred to on the Etsy forums, but I have no clue what they were referring to. Off to heart you.

How much does it cost to be on etsy? Is there a monthly fee? I'm wondering if I should look into it. I make a lot of crafts and normally do fairs and stuff, but wondering if etsy would be a good source for me. I'm going to look into this.

Etsy is like Ebay. There is no monthly fee. You just pay 20 cents per item listed, then a 3.5% seller's fee of the final price of everything you sell. Go ahead and check it out.
