Right now, I am using my husband's Fujitsu Lifebook C series and this is better than my Compaq Presario Laptop. The former is good when using the internet because the speed is much faster than the latter. I haven't used DEll or HP, so I can't compare them with what I usually use.

So you are a laptop user. How do you like them? Can you give a comparison to a desktop model?
I am trying to decide on whether or not a laptop would be good enough for me to use for wi-fi on my business. I am not always home and would like to be able to have access to some information while my husband and I are out conducting business. We are self-employed.

A laptop is, of course, more convenient than that of a desktop especially if you would like to use it for business purposes. Since most of the business establishments have wi-fi access already, i think, it is best for you to have a laptop for your business.

My very first computer was a Dell and I just loved it. It worked really well for a couple of years and then I started having nothing but problems with it. I now have an Emachine and it works just as well and it was alot cheaper than the Dell I bought. Mine is a desktop also. I don't know which one is the best, but I would take my Emachine over a Dell any day.

hmm..ok here goes:
It's all HP's at home - for personal use (games and photos) I think HP is good and reliable. Customer Service is usually pretty good too.
At work we got all new Dells about a year ago. For business use Dells tend to be more powerful (and cost a little more) and are just as reliable as HP. So far customer service has been good too (but then again, we're a business account, not just a person...lol)
Gateways I personally don't like. Every Gateway I've encountered has had problems. I must say however, that Gateway's customer service is usually pretty good.
E-machines and Acers are alright. But I don't consider them as reliable or long-lasting as HP or Dell.
Compaqs are good while they work, but if you start to have problems - good luck trying to open them! LOL. They may have improved in the last couple years, but every Compaq I've had to open up was like opening a puzzle box!
If I had a choice - I'd go HP.

Thank you for the recommendation.
I have known many people who have had Compaq's and it is always the same thing and it has gotten the reputation of "Compaq's are compacted with problems!" Ouch huh? I don't think HP did a good move when they bought them out but then again, maybe they did?
The early HP's have had their problems but I think it was all Windows 98 version centered! My HP with Windows XP has been excellent compared to what I owned before (which was windows 98).
I thought about getting e-machine but I was concerned that the longevity and durability may not be as good.
I would love to own a dell because I think they are worth the money. However, I don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water! Meaning, my desktop I use now is very good. Sometimes slow because of lack of RAM (I know I can add more, just haven't done it)
I know only one person who has a Gateway and it has an ancient Windows 98 version on it still! He is living in the dark ages still!
Basically, I would love to know how good Dell laptops are or aren't. I am looking into getting a laptop for our business in the near future.

My CEO got himself a Dell laptop when we bought all the Dells. Since he travels he uses a laptop as his desktop at work too. So far it's been pretty good. Had built in wireless - which incidently discovered an unprotected wireless connection when we first started it up. We're in an industrial park so one of the buildings around us has a wireless connection with not much security!
We've had the Dells for almost 2 years and they're all running smoothly still - including the laptop.

I need a new computer. I've had the same laptop for 6 years!! It's a Sony Vaio, I can't complain, it still is great, I just want a new one. Next one will probably be a Dell (great for the money) but ideally I want a new Mac!

Mac! That is another one that many don't consider. I thought about getting one but if I need to exchange data from a laptop to a desktop and one is a mac and the other is not, I am not sure if it can be done yet. Mac is making strides to make its share-ability more shareable! I have been told my every person who has had a Mac that Mac's are way better than any computer with just Windows.
Since you have had the same laptop for 6 years.... it must be excellent but by new ones today, it is not so good in performance and speed. But hey, I wouldn't complain either. I would have worn it out in 3 years!
I do hope you get a new laptop. I bet once you do, you will ask yourself why you didn't get one sooner!
