Black Snow

Okay spring is here in Montreal, and the snow is melting away, thank goodness for that. but when I look at the snow it is all black on top from the pollutants in the air. Is it just me, are my memories tainted but I seem to remember as a kid that snow in the piles in the back yard stayed white and clean until it melted away. I still lived in Montreal, in the city but I don't ever remember so much dirty snow. Was your snow cleaner before? Is it still clean now?

Ohh crikey that doesnt sound too nice hun and surely must be proof of the effects our lives are having on the environment I live in the UK and we rarely have snow here, when we do its not even that much that it settles on the ground but its stil pure white here so i dont no if its something local to you or not hun. Best wishes Lucy Oh and by the way i am very envious as i would love to live in canada - not just because owen hart lived there lol but i think its a fantastic country and would love to visit some time

When we do get snow here it's white and stays white til it melts, which isn't long at all. There has to be a factory of some sort that's putting pollutants in the air. Is the snow black in all areas of Canada, if so maybe it's a sign that the US and other countries have to look forward to. I can remember growing up and my mom making ice cream out of the snow, when we ever got any. Now though, it's not safe to eat it with all the pollutants in the air. I saw a program on the Discovery channel that once all the ice melts, the northern hemisphere will look like a tropical beach.

I can't talk for other parts of the country but I have people here in the usa saying they have black snow too, it is a problem with industrialized countries I believe.

I'm not sure about Montreal, but we deal with the same thing here in Indiana. I remember the snow lasting for days on end and it was still as white as it was when it first started to fall on the ground. I think the air is so dirty and it pollutes our pretty snow. Nothing is as nice as it used to be. It is sad.

Are there coal- or wood-burning industries or homes in your area? My ex-inlaws used coal and wood burning stoves to heat their home and cook on (yes, in this day and age). In the Rockies, there is always lots of snow, but it would be black or gray around their house. The soil is black, too - I hated when my kids got dirty there because it didn't wash out. I tried putting dark clothes on them if they were going there for that reason. But, that's the first thing I thought of when you mentioned black snow. When it snows, it cleans the air, but if they're using the coal to create steam or whatever, then the soot will fall and cover the snow.

The only black snow I ever saw, or have seen, is always near the side of the road where the cars drive by, which make the dirt and bits of oil or whatever go to curbs where the snow is. Do you mean there areas not near roads or anything that are black? Wow.
