hey, horses are the most amazing animals. why do people gamble on horses, do you think it is fair to let them be caged ups for years and years in the stables, then bought out only to be wipped to win? or do these horses enjoy racing . i always wonder. a friend once told me a race horse would only enjoy a life or racing and nothing else.race goers what are your opinions?

I am a thoroughbred race horse trainer. In response to your first question, why do people gamble on ball games, or at casinos? It is a game of chance and everyone who does it is hoping to put a few extra dollars in their pockets.
Racehorses are extremely pampered. They have dilligent exercise with the best feed and vitamins. Their stalls are kept cleaner than most people's houses and are bedded deep in soft wood shavings or straw. They are groomed to perfect everyday. Their every need is tended to. Most thoroughbreds LOVE to run but I do agree that some jockeys can get carried away with the whip. A really good jockey will only use his whip as encouragement when he thinks his mount needs to give a little more to win.
They are kept stalled so that their exercise can be controlled. They are bred and trained to run and if left loose somewhere, that's what they will do- RUN! Their diets are very high in fat and calories, which gives them that excessive energy. The energy is built up so they can use it in a race. Most of them race for several months, then are given some leisure time to rest up and relax.
After their racing career has concluded, a great many of them go on to do other things, such as jumping, barrel racing, some have made excellent polo ponies and even pleasure horses for the weekend trail rider. After their retirement, their diets and exercise routine has to be changed. Since they are very intelligent and willing animals, they can be retrained to do just about anything.
I hope this answers your question. If you would like to know more, I'll be glad to throw my two cent's worth in!! And please visit my wedsite. www.sharonsoileau.com

I completely agree. I do not see how you came up with the idea that racehorses are "caged up" their whole lives and "whipped" all the time. Neither of these are true. In fact, quality horses like racehorses are the most well-treated animals you can find. I suggest doing so more research about racing before coming up with negative reasons to hate the sport.

Race horses are treated with the utmost of care. They are pampered and I believe their owners do love them. People from way back have done horse racing. It is a sport and watching the horses I think that the horses love the running. Run is what these horses love to do. Here is a article about the way the race horse owner feels about their horse. It will open your eyes. These horses were made to run and they are very well taken care of.
Here is a article about a owner of a race horse. Of course you have some that abuse a race horse but you have abuse in all things.

I just have to agree with what thunderun had to say about the race horses. They are very well cared for in all ways, fed very well, nice clean stalls, get lead out for grass a couple times of day, get groomed every day and just over all great care. Much better then most back yard horses that just get kicked out in a little tiny yard with no food and sometimes no clean water.
And I do believe that most of them don't get the whip used unless really necesary. I rode lots of race horses when I was younger and they have plenty of fun and do love to run. Any horse loves to run, it is their main form of escape, so running is part of their life.
