From sniffles and sneezes to a sore throat and annoying cough, the common cold usually catches up with us at one time or another. This is the most common disease in the world. It has so many other symptoms attached the body gets really fatigued, various other symptoms are also associated like headache, mild fever, running nose etc. etc. OMG Well how do you treat it?Do you leave on its own to be cured or take medicines? For me, I always go for home made remedies. I take medicine only if gets severe.

I don't like taking meds unless absolutely necessary and most times they treat symptoms and do nothing for the actual illness itself. If I have an infection and need antibiotics or something, I won't hesitate, and I've had to take short dosages of steroids for severe poison ivy a few times. I will take the rare tylenol when I have a severe headache, but other than that, I pretty much let things run their course. Fortunately, since I don't use a lot of chemicals and use all natural products for cleaning myself and my home, I rarely get sick!

That's a great idea to use eco-friendly products at home ldyjarhead. I also catch cold rarely but its usually getting infection from the other person. Sometimes such a situation occurs that you have to be face to face with the person having cold. That time I know that I'll definitely catch cold.

I've been face to face with lots of people and still don't get sick. I even worked on the school bus as an aide with special ed kids for almost 4 yrs. All kids get sick and of course the employees that came in contact with them every day did too. In all that time I was out sick ONCE. Because I don't have all sorts of nasty stuff built up in my system, I believe my resistance is better than most. Don't knock it.

I take anti allergy tablets if it is a running nose. oNCE AGAIN, IF THERE IS THROAT PAIN AND COLD, i TAKE A PAIN KILLER, AN ANTI ALLERGY TABLET AND DILIGENTLY GARGLE with warm salt water three times a day. If there is a blocked nose, I apply Vicks in plenty and also inhale steam.

Apart from taking tablets, I think doing gargles with warm salt water is very effective natural remedy.

I haven't had a cold for a while (knock on wood), but usually I leave it alone at first, only taking vitamins, resting, and drinking tea. But, eventually, I will take some cold medicine for it for a couple of days. I get sick and have headaches from cold medicines, so I have to be very careful with them. But, sometimes the cold is too much to bear and taking the medications can help me go on with my daily life. I work with the public so it's very important not to look sick (even though I probably got the cold from them in the first place).

Thats what exactly happens to me,I catch cold from other person specially when there is no excuse to avoid that person. When it gets unbearable then only I go for antibiotics otherwise carry on with herbal teas, gargles, drinking hot water.

I don't like taking medicines at all. My favourite remedy for most illnesses is a hot bath and lots of sleep. I found that a few drops of essential oil in a hot bath can help a lot with aches and pains. I recently used myrrh oil although that can be rather expensive. Lavender is the best one for most people with many ailments and can be used on children. (Unfortunately, I am allergice to it!) If I'm not better after baths and sleep then I'll give it a couple of days and make myself a herbal steam thing. Just boil water and put a few herbs in. There are plenty of places where you can find out which herbs are best for what. I believe the only times I've taken any medicine is when it's been prescribed by a doctor and even then, I don't if I can help it. Natural remedies are usually better, they tend to have less side effects and you're very unlikely to become immune to them as with some medicines.

Also, when I am ill, I drink a lot of orange juice. This provides the vitamin C needed to help fight colds as well as replacing any fluids you lose throughout.

I usually drink hot lemon with honey, add a little ginger, and some cayenne pepper. I will also drink chicken soup. I will drink some Throat Tea and Echacinea Tea or take Échacinea tea. That is all I do besides suffer until it is over. I might take an aspirin if it gets too bad, but I hope it does not. I could not stand it.

The only thing for a common cold is let it run it's course. A doctor will tell you to get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids and that there isn't anything you can do for a common cold. That is what a doctor will tell you. I don't take any kind of medicines when I get a cold. I don't get one very often but I take the advice that I posted above. I am 58 and I can count on my one hand how many times I have had a common cold over the years.

Yeahh, if the immune system is good then we hardly catch cold. I once had severe cold & cough 5-6 years back when I used to teach in a school. There was something wrong in the air(thats what doctors said) that every 3rd person in the school had it. But it took me many many days to get it cured.

Well, when I catch a cold I will take some chinese medicines.they are herbs which are natural and keep my body in a good balance.I think there are hardly any side effects in them cos they are all from the mother nature. They are fimilar to the hunman body.I come from China so herbal medicines are easily got everywhere.and it really help! They are especially helpful to certain chronic diseases. Are there any chinese medicines in your country?I seldom take chemical medicine unless it is really serious.I think chemical medicines can cure certain diseases but at the same time they have many side effects.Besides,I will drink warm water as much as possible, have a rest and stop taking spicy food.

hey, there is no need to take medicine at all for common cold. you will be ok maximum by two days or so. the only thing is that you should blow your nose regularly so that all those infections will go off. and take rest. still if you are so particular that you need a medicine, you can try avil, paracetamol or dolo. these are medicines available in india. i am not sure whether these tablets are availabe in other countries. take care

In recent years i have suffered with colds a lot, although recently i have suffered less. When i do get a cold i found the best medicine to be sleep with plenty of vitamin c and because i'm a male and have certain lacks in vitamins and minerals i take a zinc tablet every day too. I think keeping my immune system in check with extra vitamins and minerals plus amino acids aids in prevention, and taking more time out with sleep/rest when i feel run down, helps a lot..

Well I had the flu twice in febuary and the only thing that seemed to help me would probably knock a cold out fast. And that is fortifense imune system booster, add a packet to a cup of hot water. And cold eaze cough drops which are loaded with zinc. They are both available in just about any store.

When I start to feel under the weather I grab for my something my grandfather always grabbed for and that is a homemade tonic and it works wonders for me. It perks me up,and helps the sniffles disapear fast and helps me breath better and feel refreshed. It is a tonic of 2 tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of Honey. It works wonders for me. It also is great in helping with arthritis, gives you energy and perks you up when you need it and also great for those who have memory problems, and helping you feel younger then your age. It help in aiding the body for multiple things. I have a whole book all about the benefits of apple cider vinegar and honey. I must say it works for me and others who have tried it. I would and have recommended to all of my friends and family if taken 1-3 times daily it has endless possibilities in helping you keep your health in top form. My grand father also used it and he was a diabetic i helped him keep him diabetes under control. It is full of vitamin C also good for the body. And also aids in weight loss if taken 20 minutes before a meal. It also aids in heartburn, headaches, hiccups, and legs cramps and lots more so it is what I call my cure all tonic because it works on so many different levels for so many different things.

When I have a common cold, I try to drink as much cold water as I can, and get as much sleep as I can. when I absolutely have to take something, I like Tylenol Sinus, or Contac C. I find that those work well enough for me to be able to get back to work, even if I'm not feeling that great.

At first I just go into drinking water until everything went well. As much as possible I do not want to become dependent on medicine when I get common cold. With additional rest and plenty of water I could get well from it. But sometimes when I see that its taking me some time to heal and be well, I go for over the counter medicine for common cold. Of course, additional rest is required to get full recovery from this mild disease.

I usually just take over the counter medicine for the common cold. We do not have health insurance for us to get prescription medication to help cure what ails us in my household.

I take aspirin and drink lots of hot tea. I don't like to take to much cold medicine because I notice that they only relieve some cold symptoms and not all of them.
