Did you ever have a penpal that you wrote to?

When I was clearing out a cupboard the other day, I came across a magazine and on one of the pages were people advertising for penpals, and I suddenly remembered how when I was about 14 I went to Cypress with my parents on holiday. When I was there I met a girl who lived in Cypress and we became firm friends for the whole time I was there, when it was time for me to come home we exchanged addresses and promised faithfully to write to each other. We did too and we stayed in touch for about 3 years through letters writing to each other a couple of times a month.
Unfortunately at the age of 17 my life changed drastically and I moved around quite a bit and I lost her address and so ultimately lost touch with her, but I really loved having a penpal and I often wished that I still had one to write to, although of course now I would probably print it off through the computer, but it is still kind of the same!! It just used to be fun looking forward to and receiving a letter from her, telling me all her news in Cypress, I miss it.
So has anyone else ever had a penpal? If so how long did you keep in touch for? Or maybe you are still in touch with a penpal?

Hi Rose...I had a pen pal many years ago....when we were at school we were all encouraged to write to someone from abroad....
My penpal lived in Manilla in the Phillipines....well we wrote for a good while....then i will always remeber there was some kind of natural disaster in their country....
Well that set my imagination runnning riot...and though I hardly knew this penpal...I thought that he must have been injured or someting during this disaster....and how i worried.
But strangely after that i never heard from him again....funny how life can work isnt it?

Wow, I wonder what happened to him if you never heard from him again after that?

Back in elementary school, I think grade 4 we had to pick penpals from Australia. I had my penpal many years, over 10 and then one time a letter I had sent came back, she had moved and contact was broken. One other girl from my class had stayed in touch with her penpal for a long time too, but most everybody else lost touch before long. It was really neat writting someone and getting to know someone just by letters and such.

Gosh, that was a long time, what a shame you lost contact after all that time. It is fun to get letters though.

I have had many pen pals over the years the only one I still talk to is my Aunt. She lives far away and since I was a kid we would write each other and we still do not as often but we do. She is an avid pen paller with over 100 pen pals I dont know how she does it.

I used to have a few pen pals, back when the internet has just started to emerge. That was like ages ago. I still keep in contact with a few of them but nowadays due to everyone's busy schedule it's not that often. I also had some snail mail pen pals, which some of them I keep in touch via email now.

I met my pen pal on holiday too. I was eight at the time and my brother had broken his leg the first day of our holiday so I was feeling pretty glum as I was expecting lots of fun on the beach with the whole family but we met got on and I went off with her family mostly as mine stayed with my brother we promised to write and did for about four years and suddenly I never got a reply, I wrote again but still no reply so I just left it, perhaps she moved perhaps as she suddenly hit her teens there were more important things than letter writing I really don't know. There was no indication from any of her letters so maybe something happened. I will never know, but it was fun whilst it lasted. Ellie :D

Yes, I had a penpal when I was in college, she is a girl though. At first we chat online and talk girly stuff since we are at the same age and league then we started exchanging letters every occassion. I lost in touch with her when we graduated, i guess we become more busy and my account thru msn expired so we really lost communication. she was a nice friend!

It was pretty sad yes. But to tell you the truth at the time I lost contact with her the other thing that stopped me staying in touch was the fact that I had messed my life up big time. She had last written to me telling me how wonderful hers was and I guess I did not want her being disappointed or sorry for me.

Oh I have had many penpals. I used to belong to a place called penpals international and every year I would get a new batch of penpals. I really enjoyed it and I would spend hours writing letters. It was a lot of fun. I was divorced when I did that for awhile.

It must have been hard keeping in touch when you had so many! You must have been writing for hours!

When i was a kid i had a couple of penpals with whom i used to stay in touch with. We used to write to each other almost every week to discuss about the out studies, progress in that week. Once i met one of my penpal which was actually a planned meeting and we did study at the same college later. It was great to talk to a penpal friend and all my classmates used to share our experiences which we had for almost 4 years.
Later when i got into my post grad college, i had to move to a far place which was completely new to me and i lost touch with almost my class mates as well as the penpals i had. Even now i do get in touch with friends on social network sites but since that being a long time and the gap has increased now. We being busy with out lives now don't even find time to meet. Though we dont meet we do keep in touch on and off on yahoo or through orkut. Thats a nice feeling to have friends like that.
Once i met a girl on yahoo chat whom i never saw before that, but she claimed she knew me for a long time , she heard me talking on the voice conferences and so on. Later i met the same girl on one of the forums which i was managing. This time i thought of talking to her and to stay in touch regularly as she was such an interesting girl to talk to. She is creative, innovative , clever, witty and what not she is such a great person to spend time with. Though we are in touch for the past couple of years, i still don't know her name, or how she looks , i did ask her once and she obliged, So never again asked her about her photos or name. Even now we were in touch till this Jan , but now i guess she doesn't have internet at home and we aren't able to keep in touch through mails.I feel bad about this but still hope she will come back online soon.

I never had a penpal as a kid but right now I have an email penpal from Australia and we keep in touch faithfully. One day I would love to get to visit her since I have always wanted to go to Australia.

I was just thinking the other day about my pen pals from long ago. I am an old "army brat", which called for a lot of lonely traveling time. I used to have pen pal of kids that moved all acrossed the states, and overseas. I corresponded with kids who lived in France, and Germany (where I lived for 1 1/2 years. I used to keep the letters and postcards and personal pictures, but as so often happen to service families, personal mementos get lost along the way. My special pen pal was named Erica. Her and my father were friends when we were stationed in Lawton/Ft Sill, Oklahoma. We decided to keep the friendship going as I was moving back to Chicago. We kept in touch for a number of years, but like a lot of the time, teenage years encroached and the letters came fewer and far between. Until we just mutually stopped. When I get the time (smile). I would love to have a 50ish, army brat, pen pal, preferably who lives in another country.

That is really nice, it is a shame when we lose touch with people, but like you say when teenage years come it is the last thing that you have time for! I think that I would like to have penpals again.

in 6th grade, my class had to write letters with a 6th grade class in Alaska. i was in west virginia the time. but it didnt go well or last long...my pen pal only wrote one sentence and nothing came out of it...
i have become pen pals with internet people i meet in chatrooms and profile pages...i have met people from all over the world, and chat with stuff about life in their countries and check out photos of their countries and families. instead of letters, i get emails from them. it is the same feeling...receiving pen pal email letters in the computer mail, and looking forward to see what they will say or what they send.

I had quite a no. of penpals but unfortunately, all of us lost contracts and therefore none of us wrote letter to each other already.
One of them is my primary school friends and we did write letters to each other at the beginning of our secondary as we separated. Lots of memories of us playing cheerfully and we will always miss the fun time in our primary school.
Slowly, we are not keen about writing letters to each other. Both of us are so busy of our school work that we neglect the only connection between us - the letter. From then, we lost contacts. However, quite recently, i think i found her. She had become a model and she is really beautiful in the cover page. I am quite happy for her but also feel sad that we lost contact with each other.
Another is from oversea where we like the same idols. We chat a lot! Our daily life, the obession of our idol, the news of the idols, we even write about what if the situation happen and what we will do about it. It is, again, so much fun but we lost interest and also because of our busy schedule. Slowly, and less frequently, we didn't write any letters to each other. Another sad ending.
Well, this is what that impress me the most among the other penpals i have. In the end, we lost interest in sending letters and we lost contacts when we stop mailing.
It is quite a pity to lost quite a no. of penpal now.

I think this is the saddest thing about having a penpal the fact that we become so busy with our lives that we tend to lose touch.

I never really had a penpal until I got a little bit older. I used to write to a soldier that was enlisted in Saudi Arabia. I used to send him latters just to see how he was doing and to be a friend to him.

yeah i remember that time when you have to go the post office to keep in touch with friends. I had a penpal once but unfortunately when we moved I wasn't able to give her my forwarding address and we lost touch since then.
BUt now i have plenty of 'penpals' whom i write to at least daily but thru email not snail mail... internet has a way of easing things up don't yah think? ^_^
Wish there was internet back in those days, maybe then i'll still be in touch with my ol' friend
