Why do you think they sell you more air in a bag of chip than the chips itself? I think its because they want us to buy more bags instead of just one. If one bag had a lot in it thats all we will buy, so to keep us from buying just one to full it up with more air so that we can buy more, because you do know that the more chips you eat the more you want.

It is dangerous to eat chips while watching TV. You wan't feel yourself.

I think that indycolts1 is partially right. I think that part of it is to prevent the chips from breaking and part of it is psychological. Some people might think that a larger size bag means that it contains more potato chips. That's why it's important to read the weight number on the bag. It also doesn't hurt to compare nutritional information between brands.

I do agress that the more chips you eat, the more you want. I guess the air is to cushion the chips, too. I've noticed in the stores that the giant family size is less than a pound now. It used to be the regular size was 16 ounces. It just keeps dropping in weight and the price stays the same. Maybe that's what the air is for. To make the bag look like a bigger size.
