Do you know how to swim? How did you learn?

To this day I still don't know how to swim. I do know how to keep myself afloat in deep water AND can doggy paddle LOL but don't know how to swim. I haven't taken lessons either as they were not offered when I was a little toddler. I suppose it's never too late to learn and I probably should, considering I want to put my son through swimming classes so he can learn too. The recreation center we went to today offers swimming lessons for all age groups. It costs $48 for five swim lessons at 30 minutes each, which is a good price I think. He may need more than 5 lessons but I think it's a good start. I've signed up online for classes commencing May, but it takes two days for registration to be approved so fingers crossed, the classes are not all taken by then, as I hear they fill up quickly. So are you like me and don't know how to swim YET? does your children know how to swim? did they take lessons from centers that offer them? or did you teach them how to swim? Thanks for sharing!

Me? No, I can swim. I had lessons back when I was in grade school. As I recall, I think I used to swim a lot in those days so as to impress girls. hahaha. But time moves on and today, I don't do childish things like that anymore and just use my swimming skills for scuba diving. I currently hold a rescue diver license and am planning to further that qualification next time my schedule frees up. Oh, in about...some...years? *eep* Anyway, I'll see if I can squeeze going the next step when my sched clears up. Children? I've none yet. But when I have them, I'll make sure they learn it too so that they can *flirt* with it too. LOL. Kidding aside, yeah, it would be practical for them to learn it too. You? Yeah, learn it as well. There is no time limit for learning it as long as you are physically capable, then it's alright. Until then, may you enjoy your learning experience in swimming too so that you could experience the joys of being in the water free and without fear. *me then goes to the bathtub to simulate feeling underwater* .

To impress the girls? did it ever work? Good for you in holding a rescue diver's license, was that tough to get?

Let's just say I taught a few of them some strokes. hahahaha. No, really. I did teach a few of them how to swim - for real. :) Of course, underlying that was to get their numbers and to know them...physically...*uhhrrm* Anyway, that was just me using my knowledge of how to swim for some other use like breath holding...and stuff...*uhhhrrrrmm* .

I learned to swim when I was very little. My father has hydrophobia and cannot swim so he made sure my mother taught us all at an early age. He didn't want to risk something happening so I was taught to swim when I was still a toddler. I've been swimming most of my life. When my niece was little we had her in a pool before she was a year old. We had a special floatation device that let her kick and move her arms. By the time she was two she cold swim. Of course living here in Florida swimming is a bigger part of a child's life then in some other areas which can make a difference.

Florida is a great place to visit but in my opinion not a great place to live. Some though really like it here. My niece loves the water as well. She'd be in it all year around if she could.

Yes, I love to swim, and have certificates for it. I learned at the age of seven, when I went to the local pool with the school. We had cork supports to start with but once we gained confidence, we discarded them... it took about three visits. I gained certificates for lifesaving basics and advanced lifesaving, when I was older, but I prefer to swim for leisure. Brightest Blessings, my dear friend.

I learned to swim when I was still young, my father would bring me to the nearest swimming school during weekends. But I haven't tried it when school time came for me, so I somehow forgotten the strokes and it was only during my teens that I then again managed to practiced what I've learned. Though I am a good swimmer, I could still say that I am not that strong like those other folks I've seen. I'm not sure about my niece though, since I don't have any child yet. But maybe I could teach her, once we have the time to go on beaches or swimming pools.

Hi, You are not alone. Me too don't know how to swim. I did try learning to swim during my teens in school. Problem is I was not committed enough to complete it. Until now after 3 decades, I still dont know how to swim. Sometimes it terrified me to think that water can actually kill me. Drop me in a lake, sea, river whereever there's quantity of water.. i may drown. But i know that if one keep still and try to stay horizontal, one may float. I have tried that in school. Problem is with panics and all the commotion if a situation like that occur. I may not be able to do that. come network with me http://url.e-vo.info/networking All you non swimmers out there - learn before its too late.

That's understandable. I am planning on learning how to swim, just when, I don't know. I might look into adult classes once my son is enrolled in one in the summertime.

Yes I can swim my parents paid for lessons for me and my two sisters. My partner cant swim he was thrown in a swimming pool and was told it was the best way for him to learn, he still cant swim and is scared of water now also. When my children are old enough I will be letting them learn how to swim with a proper teacher so they learn properly I think it is a good skill to have

I can understand your partner not wanting to learn after that incident. I don't think I would go near water if someone tossed me in there like that and just told to learn. That's scarey.

I can swim but I can not say that I am a great swimmer. I can float on my back and do the doggy paddle and I can swim under water a little too. I was never taught how to swim when I was a child I just watched everyone and taught myself what I know. My son who is a teenager now took swimming lessons when he was little and now he is a registered lifeguard. I have two younger daughters and have had my son teach them both to swim. All of my children love the water but I do not much care for it myself. I can swim enough to save someone but would rather just watch everyone else have fun in the water.

Same with me here! I never learn how to swim and probably never. I have to overcome my fear of drowning first before I even consider learning. I didn't teach my children to swim or send them for swimming classes. They learned swimming by themselves.

That's great that they were able to learn by themselves. I think a lot kids start off like that, learning how to float and then kick their feet and move their arms. Thanks for sharing ellie!

I know how to swim. I learned how to swim at a very young age. If I remember it right, I learned how to swim at age 4. It was in the beach that I have learned how to swim. My dad was the one who taught me.

For me I know hoe to float lol, but not swim I had a traumatic swimming incident when I was younger and to this day at 38 I can't go in deep water. So basically all I do is wade in the water or just not go when others want to go swimming. Alot of people have wanted to teach me to swim, but I just can't get past that phobia I have so I live with it in hopes that I never have to depend on swimming to save my life. I also don't know how to ride a bike, but we can get into that later

I took swim lessons at a rec center and they just could not teach me how to swim no matter what they did, my father took me to the pool and he taught me how to swim. My 11 year old he took some red cross swim lessons that did no good at all so I payed for some private swim lessons for him and he learned in a few short days. My 4 year old does not know how to swim yet but she is not afriad to go under the water.

That's good to hear that it only takes a certain number of lessons for one to be able to learn the basics. I suppose knowing how to float and when to kick your feet makes it a lot easier, it's the hand strokes and breathing I have trouble with, but hope to learn soon. Thasnk for responding and welcome to mylot!

It's never too late to learn something even swimming....I only learned to swim when I was already married and had our eldest child!! My cousins and I had a summer outing and many of us still don't know how to swim, so our eldest cousin taught all of us who are interested to learn the basics until we finally learn it..now every time we would have a family outing like swimming, all of us can already swim, not the olympic way but still I CAN SWIM!! lol.....

If you can swim a few strokes, I call that swimming LOL much more than floating and dog paddling. That's great you had a relative that taught you the basics, that's really all what I need and then I can practice to get better at it :) Thanks for posting.

I can't swim and have no intrest in getting in any water deeper than the bath tub. When i was young and stupid i would jump in any river, lake, ocean or bar pit. I almost drowned twice. and although i did try to learn to swim after i was just to panicky. When the water got up to my chest i can't breath. I live on the east coast with beautiful beaches and people just can not believe i have NO intrest in them. All 4 of my children do know how to swim,3 of them love the water, (the 4th likes the water but she is so fair skinned that she burns even with sunscreen on, so she stays out of it mostly) i made sure they would be safe around water even if their mom is a coward!

I do know how to swim. I learned when I was a little girl. I was visiting my grandmother and she had a swimming pool. One day I jumped in without my floaties, because I forgot to put them on and it was sink or swim time. My grandmother would have jumped in to save me if I had of started sinking, but I didn't. I started dog paddling and from there I learned how to swim.

I do not know how to swim and neither do my two older sister's. My mother was over protective and afraid of her own shadow, bless her heart. When she passed I was ten years old. The opportunity did not come up again until I was twelve and by then I was too afraid. All of my nieces and nephews know how to swim, except the two year old. I guess I do not really feel bad about it, because I do not have any children yet. I have no immediate desire to learn though. I can play around in the shallow end, but a near drowning at the age of 13 keeps me on the baby side of the pool.

I am sorry to hear that Rozie. I totally understand though. I don't know why I have never learnt but prefer to be on the shallow end too.

When I was growing up the lake was right across the street..There was a beach area just down the road and that is where we spent our summers..swimming..we learned by ourselves..When my daughter was born we lived in Arizona and when she was 2 we took her to swim lessons in the pool of the lady that taught her how to swim..she was a natural..It was fun to see her...while she was swimming she would raise her arm out of the water and wave to us...that was funny...Maddy will do just fine..You should enroll in an adult swim class..that way you will be able to go with Maddy to a beach and swim with him...or just swim around the recreation center at their pool together...
