I went to attend an interview last week. The main interviewer setted a subject that he asked all the 13 interviewees to put their cellphones on the table and asked us to sell our cellphone to him. He took the role of a customer. He said" in the world, there is no product can not sell to people but unqualified salesman.". I did not agree with him in my heart. He is a business man and he uses very high level mobil phone but mine is a low level one which could only support me call and receive call and also send and receive messages. There is no other functions and it cost me 299rmb. But it is useful for me. I did not think he was my aimed customer and therefore when it was my turn I tried to persude him to buy my phone for his relatives or parents who do not need many functions of the phone. But he sai he only wanted to buy for himself and this is the main reason I failed this interview.
I kept on thinking about the saying. Is it right? I think different products have different aimed customers. If a person tries to sell a product which is not useful for the customer, it would be a cheat. It is a prejudice that a good sales man can sell all the products if he wants. Because of this prejudice the image of a sales man is very bad in China.
In my opinion, good and fit products make good sales man. Honesty and consideration should be good virtues for a good sales man.
So what will you do if an interviewer looking like a bounder asked you to perform selling your 299rmb mobil phone to him? Do you agree with his saying?

How about the image of salesman in your country? Do most people hold that no product can not sell to people but unqualified salesman?

in our country, i think salesman know how to choose the right company to work with. although there are also cases of non-quality products, but still consider not that bad comparing other countries.

Let me tell you how I would have made him accept my cellphone. It is also one of the moderate model. Not so high end. I will initially ask for his requirements before I start selling my mobile to him. I will make a mental note of all his requirements and I will put the advantages of the model I have as per his requirments. I am sure that I could convince him to go for this particular model I have.
Selling is not that difficult and also is not that easy. If you really want to be a good salesperson, then you need to learn to read others, and also you should first let the customer talk and then sell your product. Most of the time, product like cell phones and other electronic items, dont have target audience at all. If you are able to convince a customer who came to buy a low end model to buy a moderate or high end model then you are the best sales man. This comes only out of practice. Another attribute a sales person should have is he/she should not lie about the product. You can enhance the best things about your product, but never lie that your product could do wonders.
All the Best.

Thank you for your comment. It is the common process to sell the things to people. But the problem is that he asked all the interviewees to see their own cellphone to him. For mine which is very simple and cheap, I could not see any possibility he would be interested in my phone. Therefore I tried to suggest him to buy my phone for his parents or relatives who only need simple functions. But he said the premises are he was the customer and he needed a phone with a lot of high level functions. So how to sell my phone to him? I had to say" Sorry, I do not think you are my target customer."

I understand the point of the interviewer. He was just trying to see who among the applicants really know how to effectively convince a customer to buy a certain product. And just as each product has a lot of competitors, he is positive that one of you could sell his mobile regardless of its features. In your case, you may point some good qualities of your own mobile that is not found from the others, like its being durable and useful and of course its being cheap and affordable too.
By telling that phrase, he was just pointing out the major and important participation of a salesman in closing a sale.
