Yellow Toenails on Big Toes

May 31, 2006 9:23pm CST
I have never had problems with my toenails but noticed the end of last summer when I removed my nail polish from them that my big toenails were yellowed. I thought perhaps it may be from the nail polish I had been using, it had a metaillic sparkle in it. I left the polish off for the winter and the new nail growing in appeared normal, but now I am polishing again with just a opalescence clear color and the nails are still yellow enough that it is noticeable under this color. Is this a fungus or could it be from the polish and what can I do about it?

It's from leaving nailpolish on for a long period of time.

I have that problem if i leave it on to long and if it is a dark color. If you don't wear any for a while it should go away.

Your problem may be the brand of nail polish you are using. It may not allow enough air to get to your toenails. How long are you leaving the polish on? This may be contributing to the problem.

It takes a long time for a new nail to grow in completely. Does the new part look yellowed? Is the nail fragile or does it seem to break off in layers? You may have a fungus. A doctor can treat this with a prescription, if you do.
