When is lying bad?

I admit I have lied a couple of times but never to the extent that I would hurt another person. For instance, I lied to some friends by telling them I have something to do even though I just do not have the energy to go out with them. Most of the time though, rather than speaking false words, I just shut my mouth and avoid saying anything. This way, I do not hurt other people. But I have encountered people whose lie to cheat and to protect their selfish interests. They fake things and the commit perjury. Do you think it's all right to lie? To what extent?

lying is always bad...no matter wat..u just shouldnt do it...and dnt do it in a relationship either...it wont turn out to good..:|

i think more or less we sometimes tell lies. small lies are ok. that too if you really need that to say. its not that one should make a habit of telling lies.its still OK until and unless it does not affect the sentiment of others.
