The basics and some advanced tips, would you be interested in purchasing it?
I have noticed that there are so many people who want to blog, but don't know where to begin. I am thinking of writing an ebook, starting off free then charging maybe $5.
Good idea?

I have thought of doing something similar with writing online using the various sites (I now write for 14 and have a few I don't suggest). However, the problem I consistantly see in this plan is the fact that there is so much crap out there. How are you going to prove that your e-book is really worth it and not a scam such as the e-book "Blogging for Dollars" which was a load of crap. It is a good idea and one that I think a lot of people could use, but you have to find a way to make sure you distinguish yourself from make money scams.

That is why I was going to have the book for free. Then once I came up with a good marketing plan and have some “value added” items in it, I was going to sell it for a small fee.

Here is a suggestion that you can use along with the tip that I left down below; when you give your book away, ask the few people that get it to write a review of the ebook so that it gains publicity and pin points all of the important information that they learned without giving your secrets away. I do this and it is a great way to also get traffic to your blog.

Not sure if a ebook about blogging would gain much attention, unless if the blogger is very prominent with "authority". Even the top bloggers don't seem to have ebooks (e.g. problogger, john chow, dosh dosh, skelliewag). I think most people learn by subscribing to popular bloggers about blogging content/tips, etc.
I learnt by subscribing to popular bloggers, and also you can be kept ahead of current changes, trends, etc for blogging optimization. Though I have attempted to offer blogging tips in one of my sites (internet online cash - in my mylot profile), I felt I had to provide links to popular bloggers about blog optimization...since they have the authority (e.g. thousands of subscribers, plenty of comments, etc...

I specialize in writing and have done ebooks about blogging on my blog. I can tell you from experience that if you charge little for it not very many people are going to take you seriously. I don't mean for you to charge and arm and a leg but only $5 isn't really worth it and a lot of bloggers would agree with me.
you were on the right track when you said that you wanted to give it away for free and then charge after. Many bloggers do this including me. It is a great way to get people talking about your ebook but when it is only a small amount, they often think that it isn't worth purchasing.
As far as an ebook goes, there are tons of ebooks on the internet about blogging. The trick is to make it unique other than the ordinary stuff like write good content or comment on others blogs to get backlinks. Readers want to read something more than what they can find for free on the internet. Give the readers something good and they will continue to return.
You could take a look at my blog on my home page of mylot. It has some really good tips and I also offer free stuff for bloggers just for subscribing to my blog. The free stuff is awesome and written by some of the top bloggers and myself.
I don't know if this helped to answer you question but I did my best.
