Hi there. It seems like now days no one spanks there kids. Most people ground them or just give them what they want. I do spank my niece. If I tell her not to do it several times & she dont listen then I spank her. I could ground her & have but that didnt work because she just finds another toy to play with or if I ground her from the TV she just plays. I dont give in to her because I think that teaches them that if you whine & throw enough of a fit then you will get what you want & when she gets bigger then she will see that that is not how it works. So how do you handle discipline? Do you think that parents should have a right to spank? If you dont have kids, then if you did how would you deal with misbehaving?

Personally, I don't believe that spanking works all the time. But I do believe that a parent has the right to do it if they feel it is the only way to let their child know that what they've done is wrong.
I think spanking should be saved for really seriously things and as a last resort. Time outs and "naughty mats" can have the same effect if used consistently.
Spanking can have a negative effect if they are done in anger and as a means of humiliating a kid.
Someone mentioned that "this generation" didn't get spanked but there are lots who did get spanked that are just as messed up and irresponsible as younger generations. And there are plenty that grew up in homes where they didn't get spanked but are really good, hard working, responsible people.
The bottom line you have to ask is - what is the purpose and what are they learning from it?

You make some good points. I dont think it works all the time either, but it worked on me when I was little. When my mom got that hand up in the air or got that switch outta the tree, I knew that that was enough. My niece doesnt even care if I spank here. She will be crying but still doing what she is in trouble for. She is very stubborn & some times down right spiatfull. Thanks yo for your answer! Hope your halloween was great!

I do occasionally spank my kids but only as a last resort or for life threatening situations. It takes more effort to remove the toys, TV privelages and watch to make sure your rules are being followed but really that is the best way. When you do that, it tells the child you care enough about them to give up your time to pay attention to them. Spanking is the easy way out and is overused. I disagree with people who say it is never, ever ok to swat a child on the behind.

I dont think spanking is the easy way out at all. I mean, when I have to spank my niece then look at those sad eyes & hear her cry, that is in no way easy. I would much rather take her toys or TV. But the thing is she dont care about that. If I unplug the TV & put all toys out of her reach, she sits in the floor & talks to her self or screams. Then goes right back & does what she was in trouble for in the first place. I guess it depends on the kid though. Some kids you can look at mean & thats all it takes then some like my niece is so stubborn & hard headed, they really dont care what you do or say. They want what they want & thats all there is to it. Thank you for answering though!

i do spank my nieces and nephew to discipline them. In our country this is being tolerated on a certain level. however i think in the US, its a crime. parents are answerable of their acts.

I live in the US. I think that alot of states, you cant spank. but i live in Kentucky & most parents around here do still spank. I think that may have something to do with the crime rate in the US being hire then that in other countries too. Thanks for responding

I think parents should spank the kid if they are being bad..i think thats the problem with the young generation today they weren't spanked so they dont show respect to others or their parents..im not saying all are bad but most of the ones i see.

Me too. If you always give kids what they want & dont discipline them then they grow up thinkin thats how the world works. You throw a fit & do what you want & no one can do anything about it. Probably accounts for the high crime rate too. Thanks for answering

I spank only occasionally, and it is more to get her to listen that anything. If my daughter is doing something that could harm her and I can't get her attention any other way, then I will smack her on the bottom and that usually gets her attention pretty fast. I believe that parents have the right to discipline their children any way that they see fit as long as it is not abusive. If a parent thinks that a swat on the bottom will work better than a time out, then usually parents know their kids and what will work better than most. I don't agree that children should be spanked for every thing done wrong, as there are more effective ways to handle things, but in certain situations that may be the only thing that works.

I believe in spanking. I was spanked when I was growing up and I turned out fine. There is a difference in spanking and beating. But I dont see anything wrong with smacking your kid on the butt. I spank my nephews if they dont listen to me. But only after a warning. So they know whats coming.
