Hi there I am interested in programming'cause I think it is really cool to write your own programs. However, I have no background knowledge for JAVA and I found it hard to find a book really written for those starters. So, I am here calling for help. Can anyone recommend one? Thanks.

Usually Java progammers have experience with C proggramming and then they get into C++. They then move into Java. The har dpart about Java is the theories that you have to learn and the Object Oriented Progamming. I find the theories hard to learn and the OOP hard also. I have not found a good Java book either. But there are some forums that you can go to. www.javaranch.com is one of them. Oh I have bought Java Programming for Dummies and it was an okay book but not what I was looking for. I downloaded a free version of Thinking in Java 3rd edition by Bruce Eckel. You can find it online. It was an okay book, better than Java for Dummies but still not what I'm looking for.

thanks for the help. I have borrowed some notes from my friends who study computer science and hope that will help. Oh, about the forum you recommended, it is lovely....I guess I will go there often.

The site has this "class" you can join. They give you projects to do. Once finished a person looks over it and tells you how you did, or tells you to try again. They give you help along the way. It used to be free but now they charge $200 I think. You can see the projects and do them on your own, but unless you pay the money you will not have anyone checking them.

Hi, I've learned Java for some time. I was learning java from Core Java 2, Vol I - Fundamentals(Prentice Hall and Sun). That book is recommended by some lecturers and friends. That book is quite detail, so if you want to start programming right away you can try go to www.cafeaulait.org then go to tutorial section. But you should read Core Java 2 book to get better understanding about OOP in JAVA. Hope it helps.
