Microsoft Retiring XP

It came to my attention a few days ago that Microsoft has decided to retire the Windows xp version. I have become very fond of xp, and evidently so have many others because they have been persuaded to extend the deadline before retiring xp. I see this as a ploy to get people to move on to the new Vista version, but everyone does not always want to move on. If you are an xp user what do you think about this move? I have heard that Vista has some glitches just as xp had. It seems to me that they should work on perfecting one version before moving on to the next version so quickly.

Frankly, Vista is a mess. They tried to make it like the Mac operation system and failed miserably. My husband and many others hate it. And a few of my friends have bought Macs rather than deal with Vista. I think it would be a bad idea for them to retire XP when everyone hats Vista so much.

I know I would miss xp terribly, Aurone, so it's great that we will have an extension.

Even though they are "retiring" XP, they have a service pack due out soon. Plus you can still buy versions of XP after the "retire" date. Low end PC will still have XP until 2010....not really retiring anything are they.

I don't know why they can't just come out and say what they really mean, sedel, but I guess that would put a damper on the drama.

Microsoft always retire the previous operating system and cease to support it shortly after introducing a new operating system. In the case of Windows XP it was scheduled to expire around now, but Microsoft have relented and are continuing support for some time to come. This was due to the many issues that people have with an older computer running Windows Vista, and by older I refer to systems just a couple of years old. Microsoft are due to release Service Pack 3 for Windows Xp very soon, and it is currently available as a RC2 version.

We are all resistant to change to some degree, and even the ones among us who look forward to new operating systems still miss the ease of using a system that we know so well. It does not really matter whether Microsoft continue with Windows XP or not because it will still perform the same in 50 years time.

They wouldn't be doing this, Asylum, if they knew how resistant to change I am.

I had no idea xp was going to be retired. Does this mean we can't use it any longer and will be forced to move on to Vista? This is a new computer and I would hate to have to take it in so Vista can be loaded and xp removed. I agree about moving from one version to another. Guess it's about money, as usual. I'm disappointed in their decision.

Thanks for educating me and making me feel better. Someone needs to devise a program that never has flaws. Call it something like Perfect Puter Program.

Don't worry, carolbee, since it's at least a couple of years down the road, and as someone mentioned, probably for much longer.

Well, carmelanirel, thanks to whatever calmer heads that prevailed, we have a two-year extension, for what it's worth.

Microsoft is intending all users to migrate to Vista. this could be the reason why it has taken this decision. but anyway I am not aware of this news untill now. XP is by far the best OS than others. The plan could if it stops support all will surely migrate to vista. I have been using Vista for a while and its true that it has many glitches as mentioned. there are quite no drivers and softwares yet in the market that can be run on vista as of now. its going to be a drastic thing if microsoft stops support to XP.

I know my best friend's huband has a laptop that has Vista on it. She says she doesn't like it. I hate to hear that they are switching totally towards vista. At the same time I do need a new computer tower. Maybe I will get lucky and find a windows XP on sale.

I'm sure they will still be readily available, Shaun, because they know that everyone does not have the means to rush right out and buy Vista even if they wanted to.

Hi worldwise! I've just been ranting about vista in an other post. Vista's ok if you want your desktop to look nice... vista got loads of glitches but thats what service packs are for. I just wish that microsoft would give use something that we really need. like a proper printer management utility or a disk defrag that doesn't take a week to sort your hard drive out!!or maybe a utility that you can convert files old with. All the extra gimmicks of vista are pretty useless and are mostly cosmetic. Vista is really the testbed for Os's that exploit technologies that are emerging from chip design 32bit 64bit 128bit etc. I hope XP will be around for another few years or so. If I have to upgrade i'll immediatley make it look like XP anyway! In software there is rarley anything approaching perfection, there are always is hardware, compatibilty issues no matter what machines you use.

I have also heard that people have had nothing but trouble with Vista, I have a older computer so truely hope they listen to the masses and leave well enough alone. I am not sure if I got a new puter if I would even want Vista on it, sounds like it has way to many issues.

I figure I'm getting too old, Deea, to keep learning new things, so I wish they would leave them alone.

Vista sucks almost as much as Windows ME did, maybe even worse all things considered since most businesses didn't buy ME. MS will continue to support XP until 2014, but they are planning to quit making marketing it as of June. What does this really mean? It means mainstream computer software places won't have XP on the shelf, but you will be able to buy it online for the next several years either in retail or OEM version. For the record you can still by WIn 95 this way if you look hard enough. In the end people who like Xp and want to use it may have to learn a little more than they ever planned on about installing or building a new system if they want it on new machines, but neither activity is really that hard. I taught a 85yo woman to put one together over the phone in about 20 minutes. She thought it was as easy as following a recipe, since it is all step by step simple tasks.

one thing for sure is that winXP was accepted by majority of PC users, so retiring XP is like saying, i'm not grateful for ur patronage. i love XP, as for vista, ....

Its a bad news. All Pc users must shift to Linux or Apple then Microsoft will learn a lesson. If he forcing to shift to vista how many ppl will do that. I'll prefer to go for linux far far far better than using vista on my machine.

How do you switch to Linux? Do you have to delete windows? Can you still use IE or Firefox?

when you say retiring do you mean just not available to buy anymore? I am sure it will still be supprted as windows 98 was for a long time after XP even came out it was still supported, i don't think they can completely get rid of it till Vista is working to notch

They always do this to sell the new software faster, I know people who still use windows 98 etc so it doesn't work. I certainly won't be rushing to buy vista I like XP too and as you mention the new software always has it's faults so I'll wait a few years at least before I think of upgrading.

I have Vista on our new computer and have had more problems than any other OS. I read above that someone converted their computer to XP and that's a thought. I think I might look into this and find out the pros and cons and how hard it would be for me to do. I need to start saving more of my stuff to disk anyway, so I won't lose much.

I don't think that Microsoft will be retiring Vista anytime soon. In the May 2008 edition of PC Magazine, there's an article on how to downgrade from Vista back to Windows XP. People that have Vista are more than willing to take back the XP, bugs and all. They are finding that the Vista is slower than than normal. The problem for those that have PC that was made to specifically take the Vista is that they have to trick the PC into thinking that what is being downloaded is the Vista when it's the XP. So, I think that we will be seeing the XP a little bit longer. DCMerkle

So do you mean that all new computer will only provide and be capable of using Vista, or that old computers shall have to use vista now? I'm fairly computer illiterate, I apologise. It's just that I'm in the process of looking for a laptop top buy, and I didn't want vista if at all possible - though its been hard going so far to get decent ones with XP at a decet price too.
