I'm this close to taking in a stray!!!

I've only known this stray cat (or older kitten) a few days. The newest "kid" on the block, he (or she) is a very clean short-hair, friendly gray cat with a white bib under his/her chin and white paws. I've already named her/him Maxie. Yesterday, Maxie rubbed against my legs and even ran in the house briefly but ran out again. Maxie has obviously had a home and doesn't seem to be used to living outdoors. He/she lets me pet him/her, and follows me around when he/she sees me. Whoever threw that cat out has no heart, and as my mom used to say, will not have any luck for being so cruel to an animal. I just hope that I can make Maxie mine before it gets hot and to save him/her from crossing the busy streets around here and getting hit by a car.
