Oh I know how this is. I'm bipolar and I live with my sister who is bipolar with borderline personality disorder and with my niece who is also bipolar. Makes it interesting at times. They are both on medication, I'm not due to no insurance and no money. The best thing I can suggest is to stay with your medication if the doctor has put you on some. Keep a log though and make sure that it is helping. With any medication especially new ones you need to make sure that they help and not make things worse. Ask your family to also make note of your behavior on them so that you can let the doctor know. Be honest with your family about what is going on. Don't try to hide it, that doesn't help. Let them also know that there might be times when you are depressed or moody and it's not their fault. It's part of the disorder.
Now many bipolars have problems with handling money. Just part of the disease. They often spend money they shouldn't, write bad checks, put things on credit, etc. When they are depressed they hope it makes them feel better and when they are in a manic phase they figure the money will work out. It might be best to let someone else handle the check book and credit cards if you have this issue. Something to also talk with your partner about.

Great idea about the check book and credit cards - especially during the manic phase - I know one person that got themselves $35,000 in debt during a two week period!

I believe it. I know I've done some very foolish things with credit cards and check books. I now don't have either. I only have a check card and that I can't go over board on. I just don't trust myself with them after the damage I've done in the past.

There are several ways to cope with the bipolar , and i was in the initial stages of bipolar and i have recovered completly now through the Joe Berrys ebook , which i would recommend to every one who is suffering from mind related issues like bipolar , panic attack and anxiety. I have few chapters in my blog which you can access throug my profile, and in case if you dont mind spending money to cure your problems then you can buy it from here

My hubby is a psychologist & works with several people that have this disorder (called him for an answer - LOL). The best thing you can do for your partner and kids is to continue your medication - even when you are going through the up cycle and think you don't need it anymore. Sit down with your partner and kids and lay it all out - this is a medical condition caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain - it is not just moodiness or weakness on your part. You wouldn't hold the fact that someone has the flu against them would you - well this is the same, but ongoing. Hubby said the biggest problem with people that have bipolar disorder is that when they are going through the mania cycle (bipolar used to be called manic-depression because people cycle through those two states) they are prone to think they no longer have a problem, do not need their medication and quit taking it.
As for borderline personality disorder - go talk to someone and keep talking to them. A great book to read is called "I hate you, don't leave me" - it deals with some of the behavior difficulties that borderline personalities go through - I would recommend you read this then pass it on to your partner. If ever you are thinking about hurting yourself call for assistance immediately!
Too long, but hope that helps!
