DDR2 RAM is really cheap at the moment and is a very good way of upgrading your pc's performance for a modest outlay. It is only of use if you are on XP or Vista OS as Win98 could only 'see' 512Mb.
RAM is a classic case of the 'numbers game' in component supply pricing. The older DDR chips are twice the price of DDR2 and the even older SDR chips are more expensive that DDR.
However, if your pc takes the latest DDR3 memory then they cost quite a lot more than DDR2.
The PC I built last week I put two 2Gb strips in to give me 4Gb total and with a 10,000 rpm Raptor SATA hard drive it runs XP really fast.
The way motherboards are built nowadays it is better to buy matched pairs of RAM chips at the same time to get full speed benefit.

Right. Except for Win98. There is no point in extra RAM above 512Mb as the OS doesn't recognise it.

well, my laptop ison vista 32bit and has 2 ddr2 1gb ram running in dual channel mode, so it is quite fast, upgrade to 4g ram is quite useless for vista 32bit will only recognize around 3-3.25g of ram.
