I had a female relative who was a prison guard for a long time in a men's facility....it probably wasn't such a good idea, however not from the angle you are thinking..SHE kept on sleeping with men at he facility..ha ha ha
Honestly I think it would not be a good idea because men caged up without women..drive them nuts..and seeing a female guard could set some of the loonier ones overboard...doesn't promote a safe work environment for her or anyone else for that matter..unless she is a tall bearded lady the size of that wrestler the BIG SHOW, then I think that would be an exception

I feel it's okay if she is properly trained and want's to. There are a lot of women who are guards in maxium security prisons all over the US.

I can really see both sides, and I think it should be a regional, institutional, and/or personal decision. Aside from the guard's safety and the fact that she's obviously going to be sexually harrassed (and the prison cannot prevent this or take the same degree of action that offices can), I'm not sure if it is the best for the prisoners either.
There are also issues such as the fact that a maximum security prison would hold serial rapists, etc. People who feel very violently towards women, and her presence would not only put her in danger, but be continuously inciting them.
But, unless there's a shortage of guards, I can't see why we'd NEED to put females in (as in forced transfers). From a legal and liability standpoint, I can also see why an institution might "frown upon" or ban female guards. Plus... when people get out, judges, lawyers and prison guards are major targets.
My uncle's a prison guard and he's almost been killed many times. It happens. Their family has been threatened and the whole works (and we're talking Southern Ontario here).
That's a tough question! I don't think I have an answer.

Being a prison guard period is tough. I dont wanna sound like Im sexist or anything but I cant see how a woman could do a job like that. But like I said my hat is off to them for doing such a job. To the men too. It is dangerous and they put their lives on the line.
