Mylot Incentive Ideas????

Okay I was sitting here on mylot this morning looking at discussions. Many of which are some really good discussions. So, it got me to thinking about ways Mylot could give us members more of an incentive to create really good discussions. I would like to get as much feed back on my idea as possible. If I get a decent amount of positive feedback then I will foward this discussion onto the Mylot staff.
So here is my idea? What does everyone think of Mylot having a weekly discussion contest? For example: They could have different catagories. Best overall discussion, Funniest discussion, Most original discussion, etc.... What mylot could do is at the end of a week they could pick 5 discussions in each catagory then give us members a week to vote on them. Who ever got the most votes would then get an reward of a couple of dollars or something.
I think if Mylot did this it would encourge Mylot users to start better discussions. So you would most likely see less of the lame stupid discussions that flood the forum. Of course you will still see some, but I think it would lessen it a bit as members would be striving to get thier discussions into the contest.
So what do you think? Do you like this idea? Why or Why not? Please share any pros and cons for this idea. Again if I get a decent amount of positive responses then I will foward this onto the Mylot staff.

these sound like very good ideas - and a lot of fun
as to the comment about the tedium on the MYLOT staff - all they would need to do is add some extra buttons in the rating area, and people would essentially vote on them - button=funny, button=controversial, button=original, etc.

yes, i like your idea....it would really encourage mylot users to start a good discussion to be able for their discussion to be chosen...that's great! it would also motivate mylot users to post here....what a great idea. i think we should request the admin....

Thanks for your suppot. When you say few will take part? Do you mean in the voting? Because I think quite a few would vote on discussions if mylot did something like this. I can see how it could be time consuming for mylot, but at the same time it could be very easy. I have heard rumors that the moderators are amoung us, but we don't know who they are. So during the week they could easily keep an eye on the different discussions and then choose the ones for the contest at the end of the week. Of course all the details is something for mylot to work out and not me.
I really wish I would have had better support of this idea. With so little support, I am not sure that Mylot will go for this idea. I will give this discussion another week and then foward it on to them.
Guess we will just have to wait and see.

Speedy, I think that would be a great idea, not only would it give more people an incentive to be on this site, but I think it would generate a positive energy for participants!
You have some good ideas, and I also think you should consider being on the myLot staff, with incentives like that!

Thank you so much for your support!!! It is greatly appreciated. As for me considering being on the mylot staff, I don't think so. I already run a freecycle group that keeps me on my toes, plus running my household. Also, if I was on the staff believe me I would do some serious cleaning up of the place and would probably upset quite few people in the process. That is one kind of stress that I just don't need. But thank you for thinking I would do good at it. That makes me feel good.

At the end of every week, five discussions for each category you mentioned.. If there were three categories only, that would be 15 every end of a week. Who would do a tedious task like that? I guess just a single different category for every end of the week would be easy to assess.

Thanks for your support on this. The catagories that I listed are just ideas for different catagories they could have. It would really be up to Mylot to decide what catagories they want, how many discussion to choose from in each, and what the reward would be. I just wanted to give and example to better explain my idea to everyone.

So how would myLot figure out which kind of discussion needs to be among the top five?
Would the number of responses be a factor?
Then again, there are really some discussions that are worth looking at even though there aren't really much responses to it due to sometimes, not being viewable easily for others to read...

I am sure its a great idea
I think mylot may have already implemented this idea as we don't know how mylot algorithm works.
This would definitely encourage the mylotters to start quality discussions.
Yes,as you have said,this will also decrease the amount of below average discussions,in mylot significantly.Some are starting a discussion for the sole purpose of starting a discussion.
Let the number of votes got for each discussion,not be shown until the end of the week.If not,when the number of vote difference is less,it will stimulate to create fake profiles.
By the way,if you forward it to mylot ,please add this suggestion too if you agree.

NO we don't know how the algorithm works and those that start better discussions may earn more than others.
I like your idea to not let anyone see how many votes a discussion has until the end. It would definitly keep it fair that way.
I do like your idea and I will foward it on to mylot. I will be fowarding this whole discussion, so any other ideas that are thrown out there will be sent as well.

I think it would be a good idea. Gives us users some say in it is great to. Id love to be able to vote on the best. There are some good posters on mylot that deserve to be rewarded for there hard work.

Yes it would be nice to acknowledge those users that work very hard on here. Plus it gives a good incentive for others to strive to do better, in turn making Mylot that much better of a site to be part of. Thanks for your support.

I do like your idea about the categories and what not. I agree that alot of people wouldn't want to take then time but I bet enough of us would to make it worth trying.
I think something more needs to be done with the "best responses". Yes it is reward enough just to be acknowleged but if mylot wants people to give their best every time then maybe there should be an extra incentive beyond just that designation. Like maybe the person who earned the most BR's in a week gets a bonus in their earnings (or the top 3 or whatever). Another thing would be "user's choice" BR's. Right now the OP picks what they think is best but I think it would be fun to let other responders also put in their vote for what response they think is best (no voting for your own, just like the rating system). After a predetermined amount of time mylot would mark the response with the highest number of votes.

First thanks for your support. Second, more great ideas that I didn't think of. I definitly like your ideas too. Changing up the best responses would be a nice change. I will definitly be fowarding this discussion onto Mylot. I am going to wait until I get some more responses first. Lets keep our fingers crossed they like our ideas. Also, I have copied this discussion into a word document just in case it mysteriously disappears, as a lot of discussions seem to be doing lately.

I think that is a great idea and it might make us get into meatier discussions than what is your favorite flavor of ice cream or what is your favorite color?: It would be fun to compete in various categories and maybe even win a little extra money. I am all for it and hope others share my enthusiasm. I cannot see any cons at all.
