Is your cat as strange as my cat?

For those of you who don't know I have a 3 year old neutered male cat who before I got him lived for 6 months in a basement and before that he was abandoned and spent a whole summer roaming the streets of his neighborhood. I've had him for almost 3 months now and he still doesn't really trust me to even pat him. He spends most of the day and night under my bed, won't come into the living room where I spend most of my time, he won't sit on my couch or on my lap. There have been a few very small breakthroughs that get me very excited. When I go out on the porch for a cigarette he will cry behind my apartment door but when I go back in the apartment he runs back under the bed. I bought him catnip that does nothing for him. This morning I spent half an hour playing with one of those feather and bell things at the end of a pole and he actually started batting at it for a couple of minutes but then went back under the bed .
Do you have a pet who you think is strange? Is my Bigguy ever going to trust me?

He is such a beautiful cat! I have a cat that is strange too. I have no idea how she got like that. We have had her since she was 6 weeks old. I love cats. She was a loving kitten but as she got older she didn't like for us to pick her up or pet her very much. If we are setting down she well want us to pet her with our feet. She acts like we have hurt her with our hands and we haven't. She is seven years old now and in the past six months she has let me pet her once in a while with my hands, but I have to keep an eye on her because she well bite without any warning. We do love her and wouldn't know what do do without her.

Give him time. He will adjust. My mom's cat, Suzy spent a year on top of the washer because my mom got a dog. Finally after a year she interacted with everyone again.
I have a cat who thinks he is a dog. He begs, fetches, and runs from window to window to see what is going on. He is definitely a riot to watch. LOL

I think you just need to give him time. After being left behind so many time, he is probably afraid to get too close to anyone.

sometimes cats get serious abandonment issues-they're afraid they'll loose their people again.and it takes awhile to reestablish that trust.
i've had 2 i'd had to rebuild that trust in,it took them awhile.
they'd wail horribly when i went to work, like they'd not see me again.
he will come around eventually, once he realizes things have changed :)

I think it will take him awhile to get used to you and know that you are not going to abanded him like others have. I got my kittens from a shelter where they were locked up in a small cage and the first week all they did was hide. We got stuff out and shoved it under the bed to try to get them to play and they have finally come out. I wonder if you got another cat that he could play with maybe that would break him of his abandoment issues not sure though.
