Do you lie about having food allergies?

I know there are a lot of people out there who lie about having food allergies. Maybe it's because you don't like your mother-in-law's deviled eggs, maybe you think it will make the chef more likely to leave the onions off your cheese burger or maybe you just want to look more "interesting" by having this mysterious ailment. I want to know what foods you lie about being allergic to and why.

It's interesting how other people react to folks with any type of allergy. My son has severe food allergies and it just amazes me how a lot of people react to it.

I've never lied about having food allergies. The ones I have I am truly allergic to, and if I'd eat them I'd get really ill and have my throat close up. There are foods I'd just as soon not have, but instead of saying I'm allergic to them I just tell them I don't care for them. I can see no reason to lie about it, there's no point in not being truthful. An acquaintance of the family gave me a food I am allergic to that was in some food. She found out real quick just how ill someone with a food allergy can get as she said "I sure didn't think a little pinch would hurt!"...needless to say, she never did THAT again! Your poor son, it's hard to get some people to understand the seriousness that food allergies can cause.

The worst is that most people think that if the allergen is not listed in the main ingredients, the item is safe. Not so!

Your right about people thinking I don't see ________ in the ingredients, we're good! HA most near or fatal reactions are caused in fact by cross contamination issues and companies are not required by law to list cross contamination. Both my children and I have food allergies and most days it feels like an uphill battle to get people to take you seriously.

I've never lied and now that I have my own set of real true food allergies I don't have to. There are some things that will make me extremely ill like artificial vanilla and aspartame. I know within moments if they are there or not and wont touch another bit. Artificial colors don't mix well with my insides so I try not to eat too many of them either.
I now know I'm allergic to tomatoes, lemons and tea (of all things) so I will actively avoid them.

I heard of an author who appeared on Oprah promoting his new book of 'famous' recipes. He gleefully admitted he lied about having food allergies so he could get 'insider' information. As the mother of 2 beautiful FA children. I found that very distasteful and I believe that things like that are the reason it is sooo difficult to get information from resturants when we're trying to find somewhere to have a family night out. I also love when peopple tell you that "If your children are that sensitive you should keep them home" like having a medical condition means they don't have the right to a normal childhood.

I'm not allergic to many foods.
But I'm allergic to laundry detergents
and fragrances.
They give me migraines.
And, I'm allergic to rag weed and
dust mites and roaches.
