I skip Bible verses on MyLot.

When I am in a debate with someone here and they quote a bible verse to me, I totaly skip over it. Every single time. If I wanted to study the bible, I would go to church. I just have to laugh because I live in America. American Christians love to pretend the whole world agrees with them. So if they are loosing a debate because they cannot use factual information - they turn to the bible. Seriously people - two things with that. Number one, I am not a Christian and never will be. The bible means as much to me as the Koran means to a Christian. Almost nothing. Number two, the bible can be interprited to mean ANYTHING. It all depends on how you read it. Crazy people all through history have used to "word of God" as an excuse to murder, rape, steal entire countries, destroy entire cultures, pillage, loot and plunder. People defended slavery, by quoteing the Bible. People drove thousands of tribes of Native Americans to the brink of extinction, waving a Bible high in the air. Not exactly the best source for moral direction, in my humble opinion. The next time you are in a discussion with me and you decide to quote any verse from the bible, I just want you to know I skip over it entirely. I have never read a bible verse on MyLot and I never will. I am not a Christian, so the word of YOUR god, is worthless to me. Sorry!

And they say Christians are the ones that are close minded....... At least we listen and try to understand where non-christians are coming from....But, to each it's own.

Maybe to you it doesn't have any business in "your" discussion but to someone that does believe in God and what the bible says, it does. This isn't a court of law, and last time I checked, we have freedom of speech, just like you do. By no means does it mean you have to listen, but if you want someone to take you seriously, you really should listen to them - everything they say, not just the parts that you like, or that suit you. I may not agree with you, your lifestyle, or your beliefs but I do listen to you and I will respectfully take what you say to heart. Depending on what question you ask or how you ask it, someone that opposes it, has every right to say the way the feel. You can't expect everyone to agree with you nor can you expect people to not say what they believe. Just like I would never expect you to not say how you feel or stand up for what you believe in. It's sad that just because someone believes in God and upholds what the bible says and wants to live their life according, they shouldn't be allowed to participate in the discussion. I suppose because I disagree with homosexuality, that I shouldn't allow anyone that is homosexual to participate in mine discussion... Would be a bit racial or bias, wouldn't it? I would NEVER do that mind you. But that's basically what you are saying. That you want to only allow people that agree with you, or you only want people that aren't religous.

Now see, right there you have argued a point, very well, without useing any scripture! Good for you! And guess what? I read every word you said. The point of THIS discussion, is that had you thrown any Bible verses in your response, I would not have read the Bible verse. I think you are missing the point of this discussion. I am not trying to start an argument. I am just saying quoteing scripture is no way to debate, because how you read the bible is different from how another might read that same exact verse. I am NOT saying I dont listen to Christians. I just dont like being hit with bible verses when they cant think up a retort on thier own. Thats all :)

Im not argueing this with you. You are obviously hankering for a fight and I will not give it to you. I did not make this discussion to fight Thank you for not useing any bible verses in any of your responses though! You stated your opinions without useing any scripture. Kudos to you! Have a nice day :)

Totally with you here, at least in regards to Bible quotes being totally unnecessary in the VAST MAJORITY of debates. But I guess you knew all that already... I guess some people are just totally blinded to the FACT that no one believes the exact same thing as them and few people in the world follow their religion. They assume that because they BELIEVE their deity is the one and only, that everyone else should also believe that. They don't seem to understand it can work the other way...

Kathy I wish you wouldnt get so upset... this is after all MyLot and creating discussions and having responses is what its all about. Now let me say this - I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID!! I do. Honestly. From the bottom of my heart I agree with every word you said. "Quoting scripture is pointless if the person is not ready to hear it" EXACTLY! You hit the nail on the head. Thats all i was saying when I made this discussion. Nothing more, nothing less. I think you are getting defensive, but please dont feel the need to arm up for a battle. Thats not what I wanted to do. I am not attacking Christians. i will never make that mistake again. All I am saying is they should not use scripture as a weapon. Thats all!! And besides, it sounds like you and I are fighting on the same team on this one :)

Hi 112aTee, You are of course absolutely right in what you say, As a non-Christian, Why would you be concerned about the Bible? I do have a question for you though, do you believe the Koran to be the word of God? I have no particular reason for asking this, just curious? Blessings.

Not by a long shot. Come to think of it, I am not so sure I believe anything written by a human could be the word of God. I will have to think about this some more, Pose. I think God, in whatever form its true self be, would speak to us in our hearts, if anything. Any religion is just a man-made barrier to that spiritual connection with the Creator that all living things automaticly HAVE, simply by virtue of existing.

Are you saying that all people have the same god/creator/pantheon etc. or do you believe that all people have their own version of a creator (ex. god, thor, natural theories such as the big bang etc.) and each person has the right to find this creator in whatever form he believes it, that religions are an obstruction that get in the way of this? Just curious where you are coming from.... Dan

I am astounded by these people that say " its gods will " or " he is the creator" when they are unable to answer anything that is of a physical nature eg the evolution of mankind, I cannot beleive that normal rational educated people accually beleive that a god/superbeing created everything thats excists today. There is never any answer to why is it only the earth he created man to live on and not every planet in our solar system. it might make some sence if every planet was able to surport life. sorry for going on a bit but I can never get any one from any religiuos sect to give a straight answer without quoting from their book or teachings, which is of course the only one to be correct, as the other religions are all false. I will aways remeber that religion has killed more ppl on this planet wars, revenge ect then any natural cause

Way to speak up there Tee. I usually don't go into religous discussions becuase to me noone has it completely right and you have read my views. But I do agree with you if I wanted a bible verse shoved down my throat I'd talk to my mom or go to a mass. I loved how I was going to he!! because I got a tattoo and my tounge pierced. LOL!! I just don't understand why people can't just let other people believe in what they want to believe in we came here to escape religous persecution partly and yet here people are still doing it. You said your wiccan right. well here let them go to this link and watch this video and then see what they have to say. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgLyozVG-uQ I think you'll like the video.

No, I dont consider myself a wiccan. I have studied it more than probably any other religion, but I have yet to find THE religion that really hooks me. I walk a solitary path of content. I really dont attack anyone for their religious views but that curtesy is rarely ever returned to me. It seems like every religion I have ever come across is trying to sell me something. You know what I mean? "Come to us - only we cknow the TRUTH!" Give me a break. By the way, I loved the video, mostly because of the music. I am a Loreena McKennit stalker... I could listen to her sing every moment of ever day for the rest of my life, and die a happy man.

The funny thing is like I have said numerous time I don't think one religion has it right I think we all have bits and pieces. But we don't have it right. LOL!!! Oh by the way sorry about thinking your a wiccan I just don't know were I picked that up from. Must be the five kids driving my to the nutter.. LOL!!!

I can see how you thought that. There was a time in my life when I would have declared I was wiccan. As I grew, and learned, I realized that no path that came before me really embodies what I feel though. The older, earth based religions generally rub me the right way though, so I am not offended at all by the confussion :)

Ok, I've read this entire discussion and all the responses twice. Here's my take. First, Christians trying to 'witness' to non-Christians here is a waste of time and no amount of bible verses being thrown at people is going to change their minds. It is simply an exercise in counter productivity. So leave off and save the witnessing for APPROPRIATE venues. Secondly, though we all enjoy freedom of speech, that is not a license to berate and foment hate. And pushing belief systems or acceptance of your own convictions down someone's throat results in just that. A belief system whether it be based in Christianity, Heathenism, or any other 'religion' is a personal and subjective choice. It is not and never should be a 'weapon' to wave in the faces of people who do not share the same views. Frankly, I don't think it's anyone's business to judge others based on their belief systems. What IS our business is to show respect. You don't have to be 'saved' to do that. That is a SOCIAL rule, not a religious one. This is a social site. So be social, talk about whatever you want, but save the need to be saved for threads of like minded people and leave the rest of us to wallow in our sins if you view us that way, because make no mistake - no matter what God you believe in or don't believe in - it will never be your place to judge others different from you. And just to clarify - this response is for those of you who read this discussion and responses, not directed at any one person in particular. I'm just voicing my views on the topic under debate.

Amen to you spark! And not to quote the bible - LOL - but doesn't it say something about bearing witness, not talking witness? In other words - if a person wants me to believe they're blessed and their way is the right way, shouldn't they just live that example instead of shouting in my face. "Who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you say" -Ralph Waldo Emerson. Frankly Tee - I sometimes wish there were an ignore button on here so I could tune out some of the 'in your face, but since I could not possibly have any legitimate reason for my inane narrow minded little opinion, I'm going to quote the bible to you IN ALL CAPS to make sure until you conform to my point of view.'

I believe in the judeo-christian God. I believe, not because a book told me to or because a minister told me to. I believe because it is something that I feel. I also believe in the gods and goddesses of the varying pagan faiths. I believe because they feel as I do. I don't believe in the bible. But I've studied it. I know it. And I can counter each and every idiocy I see. The only time I put out scripture is when someone throws scripture at me. If someone throws a snowball at me, I will throw back. But I respect allllll faiths. Frankly, I feel that my God does as well. I believe that none of us knows anything and we are all victims of the interpreters that drive the modern interpretations. My greatest fun in bible discussion is diversity. I dig when people make me think in another directions. The bible worshippers and the Paulinians know nothing except what they have been spoonfed. Closed minds are freaky. I just want to tell them,"Don't drink the punch."

It is a shame if a person is too arrogant to learn from scripture and the Bible contains much that is philosophically profound. Of course any text can be interpreted abhorrently and used to justify all manner of things by the disreputable or ill-educated. However, there is good and bad interpretation and bad interpretation does violence to the text. all the best urban

Hello Urban, This is a very old discussion. I will admit gladly that my opinions have since changed on this subject. I no longer allow others to allow me the pursuit of God and the truth. I have been reading the Bible for myself, and found it to be nothing like I have been told all this time.

I'm not sure what you're refering about. I'm not sure why you're angry, and I'm not sure why you are made at everyone else? If you are having a discussion about Islam the Koran is going to be used, so if you are discussing Christians, the Bible is going to be used. Well, I'm not sure why you added religion as one of your interests if you think it's (in your words) "worthless". Why are you even having religous chats if you don't believe in any religion? Therefore, I am pondering your statement, and why you even care about what other people do with religion if you don't believe in anything. Have a nice day Pablo

I read the bible verses in discussions, but for my own education. I am a Christian, and as you said, everyone has their own interpretation of it, so I read it for what I believe it means, not necessarily the same reason the poster posts it. I don't post bible verses, unless its "Judge not lest ye be judged." And that is usually to the fundies that are bashing homosexuals or women that get abortions. It always amazes me how these "Christians" can quote all over the bible, but seem to forget that one simple verse. I don't post bible verses for the simple fact that people are here from all walks of life, from all nations and with all different types of beliefs. Although I am a christian, I have never believed there was one best or true religion. I accept everyone as human, and even though I love what you call "my God", I would never try to force it on someone else.

You are another stunning example of Christianity my dear. Would that more Christians understood this very simple message from their very own Jesus Christ. I do not ignore the opinions of anyone, however, to use the bible to back up their own beliefs seems a little counter productive to me. Have your beliefs, and hold firm to them - by all means! But show me that you are hukmble enough to admit that you may not have all the answers just because you can quote bible passages. It means something different to everyone :) Always a pleasure, my dark and lovely friend :) Tee

I am amazed, II2aTee, at your degree of smugness. I hope that you don't think this discussion will change the way any of us Christians view the Bible. As with anything else, there has always been the potential for misuse and abuse of the Bible. That's life. Those of us who seek wisdom and understanding, however, have studied our Bibles and discerned the true interpretation of it. You say you live in America, well, I'll have you know that America was founded on the precepts in the Bible. The choice is yours if you c have decided not to respond to discussions using quotes from the Bible because myLot is a forum where you can exercise that freedom.

As far as I know each of us should respect others belief. I treasure the words in the bible.. Even though your not a Christian, you should respect Christians. Even Satan use the word of God. It depends on the person's way on how to live his life. Not all Christians are good follower, they might sin against God. The thing their is we know how to repent. Your God and our God is ONE.

I can not understand why people come to the religious section and make post attacking Christianity Islam and Judism, and think they will use logic to swey people that they are wrong in beleiving the way they beleive. Why bother? Why not debate someone in science or some other topic?

Spring this is a very old discussion, ressurected for some reason. My opinion on this subject has since changed. I am reading the Bible for myself now, every night before bed. This is in contrast to allowing other people to tell me what is written and force thier translations on me. My relationship with God is very personal, and I have learned now that I will not allow people to scare me away from Him by saying that because I am gay I am wicked and going to hell. I know the truth now, and no one will ever scare me away from God again. Not that you would, of course. But you know what I'm saying..

Good for you Tee... LOL, I'll remember not to quote the bible at you (not that I would anyway). Which is not to say that I won't quote the bible. As a homosexual christian I tend to quote the bible from time to time... usually when someone has either the gall or ignorance to state that ALL homosexuals are going to hell. I don't believe this to be the case and point them to verses that state otherwise. So if I ever do that in one of your discussions please excuse me... and feel free to skip the verses LOL... they are not aimed at you but at the narrow minded, self righteous people who think we don't have a right to be who we are.

You are right about that. Insecurities bring out the worst in people. Ironically certain religious groups no longer knock at my door. Why? Because they can not denegrate my beliefs by such tactics and while I do not quote passages,I can out argue them. To me the Bible is used as a tool and what is in it is a guide, but after 14 years of Catholc schooling I know the basics boil down to one or two principles to follow. I believe at this point in life we should ask the following "what would Jesus ( or whoever your belief system holds high) do?"

P.S. I have a friend who belonged to one of the fringe religious groups and came back to her original beliefs. She told me that many groups change the passages by deleting certain words and changing syntax and so on so it would back up their current ideology.
