Quiting my career to pursue college

I know that in some people's eyes I am still young. I will be 25 in Sept. However, this is a very tough decision. I joined the military out of high school and did that for four years. Now due to certain circumstances, the whole Iraq war thing going on, I was not able to pursue college while I was in or should I say it would have been a little harder to and I was not willing to put in that kind of effort at the time. I was honorably discharged from the army in 2006. I started working at a car dealership selling cars. Found out rather quickly that I was pretty good at it and thought that is what I wanted to do. Well the past almost 2 years have been very successful, from a money aspect at least compared to my salary in the army. What kills me is the hours. It is a 75+ hour week every week. 6 days a week. I thought that it wasn't that ig of deal at first, but am starting to realize that it is or at least will be when I have children and do not get to spend time with them because daddy works all the time. Ok, so to make a long story a little shorter by selling cars I was able to support My finance and myself while she was in college. Well we lived a nice lifestyle and had a great wedding and now we are in that oh so typical situation here in America called credit card debt. I still have about $17000 roughly to pay. So now I want to go to school to get my associates degree in nursing and become an rn. I know that I will have to work as much as I can during it all to keep paying the bills I do have. So I was basically wondering if anyone had any advice or inputs or just anything they could say to help out. I figure that in order to be living very meagerly and paying off a large chunk of the cards each month I would need an income of around $2000.00 a month preferably. I have budgeted and determined that I can make it with $1200. any ideas about good ways to make a decent income while in school. Thank you and I look forward to hearing some responses. -Rob

First off, let me offer you my thanks for your service to our country! You sound like a real go-getter and I think you will be successful at whatever you do! As a nursing student you will be busy writing lots of papers, I would assume. There are many websites that will accept article submissions from free-lance writers for payment, and while you may not earn as much as you need (or you might, who knows?) you could make some extra income by selling the papers you'll have to write for school. The two I write for are Associated Content and Constant Content, and there are many others out there.

Rcog-- I would start living as frugally as possible as soon as possible and continue working for a few months before starting school and see if you can get some of that debt paid off before you start school. The longer you take to pay off your credit cards the more you are going to pay. If you can cut that credit card debit in half before you start school it should make life easier for you and your wife and shouldn't add that much time to your schooling. Just a thought. good luck with your schooling. Nursing is an excellent field to go into.

Rob, Although I don't have a part time job idea for you, I do want to encourage you in your schooling. There are many options such as online, weekend and traditional full time. The average American changes careers at least 3 times in a life time. Having an education behind you assures better opportunties. Stick with it.
