So it just started storming

One of my schnauzers used to be terrified of thunder if she was outside. Even though she had a big veranda to hide away from it, she'd still sit right up against the back door, shaking, until we let her inside if there was a storm. If she was already safe inside during a storm she was OK with it, but she wouldn't go outside. One of her cousins (which we bred, but didn't own)used to be so scared of thunder that she jumped over the fence once during a storm and ran away. She was lost for several days, which was very stressful for all of us. Our Pharaoh Hounds don't seem to be as concerned about the thunder storms, and the two schnauzers we have now don't care about it. Different dogs, different attitudes. I love thunderstorms myself, but some people hate them. We're all different!

Dogs are naturally scared of violent weather. My grandpa taught me how to cure this. It works best with puppies but can help with dogs of any age. When you see they're getting scared, take them into your lap and tell them what a good dog they are. When the thunder claps, laugh and say "good stuff" or something like that, whatever you use to tell your dog or cat that you're pleased with them. The secret is to get them to associate the scary sounds with your approval of them so that they think the sound signifies approval. Works every time! You could probably ease your dog's fears by doing this. Since he's older, you won't be able to alleviate it altogether but you can make him feel better about it.

oh yes, i had a rottweiler that was terrified of storms and would try and jump in the bed with my husband and I. LOL! It was so funny to me to see such a big dog get so scared of lightning and thunder. I miss her so much, but we coudln't take her where we live now so we had to give her away until we moved again and she ran away. it was very sad, but i have some awesome memories of her. God bless
