Haha don't worry. This happened to me a long time ago. I think it was in prep school or 1st grade. My teacher noticed that I was writing with my left hand. She told me that was the wrong way to do it. She required me to write with my right hand. I found it so difficult I couldn't do it. But she was on my case everyday! Didn't even cut me some slack! I felt that was unfair and I hated her.
What do you think about this? Is it wrong to be left handed? Should teachers require all students to write using their right hand?
I think it's bull. Every person is wired differently and has different genes. That's why each of us is unique. Right or left side dominance is determined by the brain, not by some evil force.

I think it is instances like that which explains why so many adults have HORRIBLE handwriting!!
I don't think they really force kids one way or another now - I remember when i was in school they would encourage us to use our right hands, but they also had special scissors if you were left-handed.

I never had this happen to me when I was going to school and I'm older than you. I can't believe your teacher made you go through this. How awful! As a lefty no one, and I mean NO ONE, should be forced to have to write right handed.
I remember reading in a book by Laura Ingalls Wilder about a left handed student who was forced to write right handed. If I remember right, the teacher actually tied this student's hand down to his desk, so that he had no choice but to write using his right hand. This was the first time I had ever heard about such an incident. And it's a shame that it happened to you.
I don't blame you for hating your teacher. I know I would have resented a teacher of mine had they done this to me.

Hi there lefty,
Wow, is that a true story? Poor boy. That's like torture already! At least my teacher didn't go that far as to tie down my hand.

Apparently. Mrs. Wilder just wrote about her pioneer life. You can read more about it at this link:

The books are more for young teen readers, but as an adult I have enjoyed them very much.

When i had my first daughter everytime she would pick up a spoon, crayon, whatever,in her left hand i would move it to her right hand it never occured to me that she might be left-handed (i was only 19- thats not a good excuse it's just the only one i have). My husband and i were both right handed. She still complaines( at age 28) that i screwed up her wiring! By the time i had my second child i relized that she would use wichever hand was comfortable and she did -her left! I let her teacher know that she was coming into school left-handed and i expected her to leave the same way! That is a conversation that i also had with my sons teacher 17yrs later. So i have 2 righies and 2lefties.

I guess it really does screw up the wiring. I myself am pretty screwed up: I am right handed in everything except writing for which I use my left hand!
