Hello joeli, My husband has the very same problem. He is high energy, high metabolism and is underweight. He works hard and eats me out of house and home yet I struggle to keep his weight at 150. What I do is buy him the generic version of ensure only I get it with the plus, it has added calories. he drinks one every day. Then three times a week, I make him shakes of carnation instant breakfast half and half, with a protein powder added, any generic will work. Thats is the only thing that works for him.... Shesh I even look at a cookie and I gain weigh. People do not realize that for some people it is as much a struggle to gain as it is to lose.

I agree with Angel in saying that some people have also the problem of gaining weight as it is to lose. Society only is focused on the overweight but a lot in our society is also underweight. My son is also lightweight in structure and have been struggling since his childhood to make him plump but I guess it is in his genes as he has body structure the same as his father. As long as he is healthy and active, eats well, I dont worry about him being thin.

All people have their own body structure so sometime more eating will not help you out.your body weight is mainly of your bone so if your husband is underweight just check for calcium, give him food rich in calcium.

It probably is his metabolism, he burns up a lot of calories, faster than the average person. He could start eating a lot of junk food, and starchy fatty foods but it is not that healthy. I think he should see a doctor or a dietitian for some guidance.

My husband gained weight by using those weight gainer shakes you can buy at places like GNC I think Walmart sells them too. They are a powder mix that you mix with whole milk and drink two to three shakes a day they have about 3000 calories in just one shake he gained weight by doing that.

When I wanted to bulk up I used creatine to help my muscles retain water the rest is about drinking plenty of water and excersize. And get a lot of protein in his diet. I'm no expert tho So maybe he should ask his doctor?

I would seek the advice of a nutritionist or a dietician. Though he may be seeking to gain weight, he should do it in as health manner as possible. It wouldnt do to gain the weight he wants only to find some other problems caused by his diet.

Has your husband seen a doctor or other health professional about this? Sometimes, there are glandular problems that cause too much weight loss just like there are glandular problems that can cause weight gain. I agree with Angelwhispers about the shakes, that's a good idea. Otherwise, I generally don't have a problem gaining weight as much as losing weight. For me, it's more of an appetite thing and just making myself eat will help me gain weight. So, I don't know really how to gain weight when the appetite is OK.
