Purpose of life

I don't understand how one knows what their individual purpose in life is. To be quite honest, I'm not sure if I even understand the question. Is it referring to something deep inside as spiritual or something more worldly as in what we wish to do with our future? Some people seem to know at an early age what their purpose is, yet here I am at the age of 49 and still lost as to mine. I thought I knew when I was young, but that didn't work out. Perhaps, I missed it, or it wasn't meant to be. Either way, I'm still trying to figure out what my purpose in life is. Surely it wasn't just to have kids and grandkids is it? That just seems too simplistic to me. There has to be something deeper. What are your views as to the meaning of the term purpose in live? Also, how do/did you concieve your own? Your help is greatly appreciated.
