I Was Fine....Until...Has This Happened To You?

Okay this was something that happened to me yesterday, but not for the first time though. But has this happened to you as well?
Anyway, I went out yesterday, and while I wasn't in my most energetic of moods, felt pretty darn good. Then I went into the store where the shopowner knows me, and while she packing up my purchases, says to me..."You look tired." GEE, THANKS!
Now I really wasn't tired or anything...but once she said that I did start feeling tired!
Has this ever happened to you? You're going along your merry way (or not so merry..LOL) but feeling all right, in other words not at death's door or anything like that, then you bump into someone and they say, "You look tired?" or ask "Are you feeling all right, you look peaked." And then not only that but then you DO start feeling lousy?
I mean...if I run into a person and maybe they really don't look so great, I don't mention it to them...if they say something to me about how they are actually feeling that's one thing --but I keep my opinions to myself
Does it annoy you a bit when someone says something like this...sure annoys me

I know exactly what you mean!! I have this most often when I go in the post office, I have got quite friendly with the staff there on account that I go in so often. In a morning I usually TRY and put a little make up on, in between getting the kids ready for school, and then I will take the kids school and go post office, I will go in feeling pretty alert and well, and come out feeling like I am ill and tired!! They do it everytime on me, they always say "you look ever so tired did you have a bad night"!! I think no, I was fine until you opened your mouth!!!! I never ever comment to people that they look under par unless they say something and then I will say "yes I thought you did not look yourself" It is very annoying!

I swear this always happens when I'm feeling my best . It's almost like someone is trying to ruin my day for me. I could be feeling great and as soon as someone tells me I look tired or like I don't feel well then I don't. It's amazing the power just a few words can have over us!

Hey there...I agree with GardenGerty..where have you been..missed seeing you around.
Yes, I don't think people realize how one offbeat comment can ruin it for another person and make them feel like dog-do

Don't that just bust your bubble? I think it makes you feel miserable. I don't say anything to anyone unless I know they have been through the ringer and need to be resting.

I don't say anything either to someone even if they really do look bad--why make a person feel worse?

It seems to me that I hear this most from people when I am feeling at my best and thinking that I am looking my best. I have to wonder sometimes if people can tell how I feel about myself and are just trying to ruin a good feeling that I have. These comments do just turn everything around for also I start feeling just the way they said that I was looking to them. I always say that if you don't have something nice or posotive to say just keep your mouth shut. I wish more people were like this too.

I get that too...think sometimes some people just love to go out of their way to be negative and want to feel like they have some power over one by making negative comments...especially when you know you feel and look good

Hi pyewacket! Oh gosh, it does happened to me on several occasions and it really made me feel a little annoyed and down for a few minutes or sometimes it does take longer than that. Once when I attended this party last Sunday, I was really feeling good and excited and upon arriving at the party, I was greeted by relatives and my dear doting aunts. I felt very happy and relaxed and I know I felt pretty because my husband said so! Then this one relative approached me and gave me something to drink saying you look so tired and haggard, "Here have a drink!" I excused myself immediately and went to the bathroom and looked at myself at the mirror. I told myself, aah maybe her visions is not that good anymore since she has forgotten to wear her glasses. Just my thoughts dear friend. Take care and have a nice day!

Oh, Pye, I hate when that happens. Because of the different types of people I work with, I refrain from those suggestions, because they will pick it right up. I rather enjoy saying things like "You look terrific!" If I can honestly say it. Attitudes, yawns, and smiles are all contagious.

Yes it's so much nicer if a person can give a compliment rather than saying something negative that brings a person down.

Gee--I would think the docs would be happy about your positive attitude..I remember the one time I had an operation...this was in 1980---the docs kept coming into my room asking me all the time..."Are you in pain? Are you in Pain?" Uh, nope...like they wanted me to be in pain...go figure

Only once was I told this, and they were quite right... I was tired, so I just told them I was! People more often remark on how "well" I look. I've never really fathomed what that means, because they don't use the word "good", they use "well", and I'm quite sure that sometimes they're talking about my hair, clothes and makeup.
Brightest Blessing, my friend. xx

I think the remark was rather rude and uncalled for as it seems to imply that you were not looking too good. Not a very good way of keeping you customers happy or good for business.

I'm not sure if it would seriously annoy me hun, but I must admit I would far rather not hear something like that myself. I would sooner keep my opinion to myself rather than upset someone. Ok, right now I know I don't look so hot, I still have a lousy cold/flu/lurgy but I sure as heck don't want to be told I look that bad.

That's probably the worse time a person can make a comment...when you actually are feeling lousy, and by making that comment only make you feel worse than you are

-raises hand- I'm the guilty one here, but only if I know the person and they have to really look out of sorts for me to acknowledge. Just the other day I was dropping off the papers at one of the stores and one of the cashiers looked almost sick. Mentioned that she looked pretty tired and if she was feeling ok. Come to find out she was pretty sick but was trying to work thru it being she really needed the money.

Well it's kind of one thing if you know the person fairly well or interact on a regular basis all the time but different when you don't know the person well. Hope that woman feels better now though--it sucks to work when you feel like do-do

It's usually the other way around for me... People tell me I look good (healthy) when I'm feeling tired or just not up to par.
Now, get some rest... you look tired

If I had a good nights sleep and feel pretty good, so I'm surprised when someone says I look tired, and I look at them and say, do you really think so, and tell them I don't feel tired. I do have a tendency to tell people they look tired on occasion, and usually they are tired.

Yes I think it does take us by surprise if we are feeling good and then someone comes along and says we look tired, or sick or whatever negative thing it is

Not only does it annoy me, I know that it is a curse. Yes, that is right, in some circles asking questions like this is considered to be a curse. Why? Because asking someone this is bound to make them feel this way.

It happens to me all the time it seems. I have hereditary dark circles under my eyes, no matter how much sleep I get they are still there. I can't find a concealer that totally covers them though they do get covered the best I can. Apparently that is not enough because people still seem to say I look tired even when I'm thinking I look hot. I get pissed but it also hurts my feelings because I'm very self conscious when it comes to those. People just don't think before they say stuff like that.

Ihave had it happen to me also and yes it ticks me off as up til that very moment I was feeling great. People should keep remarks like that to them selves. It could just be maybe the lighting in the room was casting shadows on you, something that simple. why make a person feel sick all day over some dumb remark like that.I keep remarks like that to my self specially if I do not know the person at all.

I keep my remarks to myself to about a person out of kindness I guess. You're right too about lighting...the worse kind of lighting that can make people look ghastly when they're not is some types of florescent
