PS2 sound skipping?

Ok, so this is a problem accross games... I have the slim model PS2,about a year old. Shortly after starting a game the audio "skips" for a second every 20 sec or so. Then the "skips" get progressively longer and more frequent as the game wears on until it's more like long periods of slience with short bursts of of garbled sound every 20 seconds. It's too frustrating to listen to so I have the TV on mute the whole time. Can this be fixed?
