How comfortable are you with protecting yourself?

I don't live in the very safest of neighborhoods, although I have not had any problems since I moved here. My son and I often walk to the store without incident and I walk to the bus everyday to get to work. I've never been bothered by anyone. At the same time there have been shootings and gang related activity close to where I live. My boyfriend has suggested buying mace to carry with me, and the subject of having a gun in our house has also come up in conversation. I'm not sure how comfortable I would be with that. I've never even handled a gun let alone any other weapon. I also would be a little nervous with a weapon in my home because of my 11 year old son. Do you carry a gun, weapon or anything else to protect yourself or do you have a form of protection in your home? Why or why don't you?

I don't carry anything now but then this town is pretty quiet and I don't tempt fate by wandering all over town alone. When I lived in Dallas though I did carry pepper spray with me all the time...there it was a case of better safe then sorry.

I live in a town of 7,000 and we don't really have a crime rate or anything. But I do know that it has gradually been rising and more cops are now working for the town. Usually at night large groups of teenagers kind of roam the back streets, and I live on one of them.
If I go out when it's dark(because the road is poorly lit.) I make sure I have my steel toed boots(If anything I can kick them.) The other night I had a situation where I did defend myself, my uncle thought it would be funny to come charging at me(it was like 10 PM as well. I had my hood pulled on my sweatshirt and couldn't see him coming at me from the side, all I seen was someone running towards me and not stopping. He actually ran into me.
He took a elbow to the chest, when he ran into me because I stuck my arm out. And then almost punched him, once I realised who it was I put my arm down. He thought it was funny. He has got to be one of the dumbest cops around.
In my home, I have a long sword that hangs on my wall plus a knife collection so I think I am well armed.

Well, I live in the UK and so I do not think that we are allowed to carry anything to protect ourselves, we would be in big trouble if we did. Where I live is pretty quiet, it is a little Town and does not seem to have too much trouble at all, maybe just gangs of kids on the streets at nights, but nothing major. We do not have any weapons or anything in the home, again I do not think we are allowed plus I would feel more unsafe with having kids. But it is a scary thought that we have to think of doing things like this to protect ourselves.

I work nightshift and I should say that there are times that I feel uncomfortable when going to work but I don't have a weapon that can really protect myself since I am nervous carrying a small thing like swiss knife but I was thinking about teargas just in case.

Well, my neighboorhood is not that bad. Some people are nice, they smile at you when we guys see each other. Some are snubby but it's not a big deal. There's no riot happened ever since I moved in here. It's not so quite because my building is just beside the road. but it's not too noisy too, just minimal. Sometimes, some men shouts but not bullying kind of shouts. Men just having fun.
I'm okay with it because so far I never stayed outside after 9-10 in the evening anyway. Although I sometimes arrived late but I directly go into my apartment room. We have a secure buildign with lots of gates actually, hehehe.. I live on a second area so there's no people sight seeing in my room.

Dear friend, it shocked me to hear that you are not safe where you stay. It may surprise you when you hear that I can sleep in my apartment even the front door is open during entire night. Nobody will come inside or not even knock my door. Now I feel how safe we are here. If you feel that you are not safe in your place, it better that you should move from there for the sake of your growing son.
