Smoking and asthma

My partner has chronic asthma and has been smoking for the past ten years. He says his asthma actually improved since he started smoking and claims the irritants he exposes to his lungs makes them stronger. I have two concerns, one is that he is shortening his lif with this horrible habit. The second is that he says he will quit when we have children, but thinks his health will be terrible and his asthma worse. Does anyone know of what we can do to help his asthma whilst quitting this habit? Do you know of anyone in this situation?
