What is a rebel to you? Growing up, what kind of people were defined as rebels? Were you scared of these people?
Growing up a rebel was considered to be a bad person, a person to whom stood up and disrespected those of authority. This can either be of a enforcement stand point, or that of a lesser parental stand point. It also referred to those of whom fought for their rights in the civil war, a rebel for the cause.

I agree there were alot of times where a rebel was considered a bad person who stood up to authority, but to me rebel can mean to things, it can mean someone with no respect for the law, or of people and their property, or it can also mean someone who stands to the tyranny of opression for the rights of the good, one example I can think of is,me and fiance watched Star Wars recently, and a group of republic soilders led by Jedi Luke Skywalker and Captain Han Solo were fighting against the Empire and trying to take back the galaxy, they were called rebels by Emperor Palpatine, which in that case they were right, and the Emperor was wrong, so in my opinion a rebel can be good or bad, mostly it depends on a matter of opinion or how you see a situation, cause where some people see a rebel as bad, like the Emperor saw the rebel alliance as the bad guys, other would see rebels as good,as the people who had been conquered by the Emperor. Growing up id have to say a rebel was mostly people who wouldnt comply with police, which in most cases they were criminals and bikers so yes I was scared of them, but in some cases they were people who didnt like being pushed around by bad cops, so in that case I wasnt afraid.

I do agree with you in all the points you made above. I think everyone is forgetting about the civil war, and probably the first known reference to the word "rebel". Although, I know that this is a touchy subject for alot of people, I do have to make reference to the rebellious south and the proud north.
Although proud and rebellious can mean about the same thing, I am just using proud as an example for the north as I am not sure of another word to use.
Event the word rebel stirs a sort of 'bad' persona. So it is clearly easy to be uncertain to what a rebel really is. Especially in your example of the stars wars movies.

I suppose in a war the term "rebel" comes to describe both sides. As both sides are fighting or "rebelling" for their cause.
a rebel without a cause isn't a rebel

I agree there are too many people forgetting about the Civil War,and the fact that rebel first came around to pertain to the south, cause they rebelled against the proud north.Proud and rebellious can mean almost the same thing, but I think there is still a little bit of distinction. The word rebel does stir alot of bad persona which makes it hard to tell what a rebel really is,Especially since its hard to tell who is good and who is bad, when it comes to rebels fighting in a war, because both sides always think they are right, and always do what they think is the right thing to do.

the classification of "bad" to describe a rebel, would have to be with the people saying it.
I am classed as a rebel and always have for my hatred of most forms of government that control how I live my life.
if something is supposed to be in style,I will probably find just the opposite.
As an environmentalist,I pick on the obscure ways to fight the pollution.
so,is it wrong to be a rebel,no,the world needs us to keep the rest awake.

The world is full of crooked governments already, and the only way to help keep the "democratic" countries free are by having rebels keep them on their toes.
unfortunatly, not enough rebels get together to have enough people to put someone up to run agaist the thieves that do have the money to run.
what is needed,is to have a way of fully controlling the government, untill then, there will always be rebels.

I am sure there are secret societies of people who stand up for their beliefs and are plotting their revenge. It may not come out yet, but I am sure in time it will.

A rebel to me is someone who rebels against the union and who will fight for their rights. Like the confederates did, defend their country and fight for their freedom rather than being enslaved by the millions of laws we have now a days. Im a rebel with a clue.
