Do you turn off your router?

I have this Linksys WRT54G wireless router for about a year now and seldom do I turn it off because I am sharing it. Lately its acting up, most of the time my browser would report a connection problem, I would then notice a no activity indicator in my router's LED and I have to reset it just so as I can get back on line. Do you normally turn your router off? How long have you been using yours? Care to share your experience, should i now look for another? Thanks in advance.

Hi there my friend Busta, nice avatar. How long have you been using yours before you replace it? I was suspecting my router's maybe cooked.

Pretty much like mine, though I do not rule out the replacement i would like to exhaust all costless means first. Thank you Busta1.

mine is a netgear router. it is really relevant question whether i switch off the router or not. i never used to switch it off. is there any problems if i am not switching it off? actually, i have switched it on for more than a month. i mean it. literally for more than a month.

Vinubaby, there is a growing consensus that it is perfectly OK to just leave your router ON.

i have my own router too but i never closed it anyway, i used my internet line for my pc & 2 laptops mine & my hubby even to our new cable that we need to plug in via internet, maybe you need to change the speed so you will not face the same problem.

My router is inbuilt into my modem. It is a neat solution though not necessary ideal. When I don't use the computer anymore, I switch off the modem and router. If others are still tapping onto the network, I will just switch off the computer but leave the modem and router running.

That's exactly what I do too, although I hardly turn it off because I want it available to others any time. I guest this is the trade off, but using it for almost a year I think is too short. Thank you LordWarWizard, I felt like I'm a knight or something pronouncing your name

I have a linksys router too and im sharing it with my roommates. As much as possible i try to turn it off once in a while like at night or a few minutes just to have it a rest. Been using this for few years already. Just make sure that it stays in a cool place to avoid overheating or something.

You are definitely right about the location, positioning the router on a cool place or properly ventilated area, prolongs a router's service life. Good point Bluishrose. Thank you and happy myLotoing. he he he

It's not a matter of turning off and I'm surprised it's taken a year for this to happen. I need to reset my router about every two or three months. Just unplug it and then wait 10 seconds and plug it back it. That usually fixes the problem you are reporting. I have a linksys n300 router which I went to when my WRT54G started needing reset every other day. When I contacted Linksys the tech told me it was common to have to reset but not as often as I was doing and the router was probably going to need to be replaced. This is my third router in about 5 years - they don't live long in my house for some reason....

I'm glad you brought this up Kolleen, the absence of an On/Off button or switch for these devices would simply mean that we don't have to turn it on or off often. Hope, our house is not related

A router is like any other piece of electrical equipment if you don't turn it off periodically then it will fail, the heat generated by electric going through ANY device will do damage if if it is just left on. You have to turn it off (for more than 10 seconds) i switch mine off every night when i turn my pc off and so far i've had no problems.

I admit the heat generated is quite alarming, maybe I should schedule off peak hours for giving this devices some rest. Thanks Pmcbride

I rarely turn off my router. I also have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and it never gave me any problems. We only turn off the router when we go out on a long vacation and we want to save power. I think it has something to do with the "timeout" of your router. It may also be the packets being received by the router. Sometimes your modem might also be the culprit so you might want to check that out as well. Hope that helps.

I knew it! He he he, hanging by a thread here bro! But I plug my modem directly on my rig since I've started this discussion and its perfectly working fine. Not in my modem I guest but I'll check that "timeout" thingy. Thanks Xtedaxcvg.

yea i always turn my router off when im not using it, it just saves electrisaty (lol if thats how you spell it) i realy cant see any reason why you would just leave it on if its not being used, it dosent take much effort just to pull the plug out does it?

dunno if you lost power before the trouble started or not, but thats always been the culprit for me and ive had to reset the router, modem and isp in order to correct the trouble. have had the router (also a linkseys) since i got cable connection 5 years ago.. and i never shut it off, and its always worked fine, other than the few power glitches. if resetting everything still doesnt fix the troubles.. yer router might need to be replaced.

I have been using my LinkSys Wireless Router since 2005 and the only time I power it down is if I'm having a problem with the connectivity...which is usually once a month or less. When I have the money to spare, I plan to upgrade to Wireless N instead of what I'm using now which is Wireless G.

Three years is a long time, I really have faith with Linksys the reason I got it in the first place, I guest mine is just the lemon of the batch. Thank you Cmm2020 and welcome to myLot.

Well bro, any machine running 24hrs will breakdown :) Yes, I know Linksys WRT54G as I've sold that before. I think you can check on the warranty part coz as far as I remember Linksys comes with 3yrs warranty. My router is an Aztech & I'm having the same problem as well though I always turn it off when I'm not using for a long time. I think it's something within that gets overheated & expands....well this is what I think only, like a theory thingy. Kinda like a thermostat function mayb 1 of the connection inside has tripped or something. Normally when that happens, I'll just let it cool off & sometimes I'll use a table fan to blow direct. But it does become a hassle at times.

Hi there my friend Zweeb! I knew you'd pop up. So how are your customers taking those WRT54Gs? Did I just get the batch lemon? Good thing you remind me of the warranty. Will keep it handy when I re setup it and its still crappy.

you don't need to turn off your router. the life of a router is certain.it's almost the same that you turn it off or let it on,the life will not change a lot.for instance,a small router's lift is about five years.if you keep turning it off when you used computer.the life of the router will be five year.in the other hand,if you always let it on,the lift is still five year.why do you turn it off,it's so bored.

Good point Midautumn. I just figure the generated heat plus its working temperature is above ideal(we're in a tropical country) would add up to so much strain in my router. But then again I think you are right. Thank you and welcome to myLot.

I have a router, but I have never hooked it up yet so I can use it. Since my husband does not have a desire to be online (even though I have a Laptop and a regular Computer), I have no need to do so. But I would think there would be no need to turn it off when not being used. I leave my home Computer on all of the time, so what is the difference?

Hi Krause, it appears that this routers are plug and forget gadgets. So if ever you decided to finally use yours, it's one less switch to worry about. Happy posting.

I am now on my second Belkin "G" router, both of which I have never bothered to turn off. The first one lasted about 2 and a half years before starting to follow a similar pattern to yours. The new one I've had for about six months with no problem. The way I see it, 2 and a half years service for 30 bucks isn't too bad.

Belkin routers have good reviews on most sites I've seen. I should now look more in the direction of replacing it. Thanks Inked4life.

I will turn off my router when we don't use our computers. It is no need to turn it on as we don't share it with others. We set password for it.
