Tips for shy people

How do you start a conversation with people you don't know? More importantly, how do you keep the ball rolling and keep the conversation going on? I'm really a shy person and it is pretty much hard for me to talk to people who I'm not familiar with. Do you have any other tips for me to overcome my dilemma? Tell me all about i because my ears are open for your tips. The best tip will be marked as the best response. Thanks!

A smile is a great place to start, especially with an added, "How ya doin'?"
Another way is to maybe compliment them. Choose their clothes, eyes, hair color,...people like to be complimented.
If they have children, talk kids. Maybe relate a funny story you've heard somewhere...

Compliments really work. How do you keep the conversation going on? Isn't it hard to maintain the conversation as you go along. There are time s where we get moments of silents as we talk. Now, that's a bit hard to control. It really gives you the feeling of awkwardness, right? So, I guess the question is what is the best way to handle that situation? Sometimes it can get really annoying if you cannot think of what to say and do in that particular situation.

I have been known to go up to a person, and tell them that I would like to get to know them.
It's fun to watch the reactions to pure honesty. Some tell me I'm crazy, and others ask me why. Both ways I get a conversation going...lols
